Not Again!

    First off thanks to Larry, Deadzone and Russ for the help on the sequence putting the E-brake back together. SWMBO helped hold the U-Bolt down against the spring, whilst I bolted it from beneath. One of those Cialis moments...must have been my 12-pack abs unable to get under the running boards..eh!:D

    I now notice I've got oil fluid on my leaf spring, my steering box is empty..again:eek:. I just replaced that lower seal and put plain 85-90 gear lube in it. Did I wreck the seal? I filled it to the fill hole bolt, did I overfill? Tell me again what we were using for Steering Lube, I know we had a disccussion a few years ago.

    I recall the discussion here or elsewhere. I believe the ultimate conclusion was to use John Deere cornhead grease.

    Hey man how your doing ?

    I remember that discussion to and i can read in the trucks manual that you can use 90 cardan oil there aswell. You did right filling it to the overflow hole lever. The manual does not say anything of using grease of any kind inside the box (graphite lube is good to) .
    If the steering box is leaking oil it should be easy to locate where and how much its dripping oil. Maybe you have to teighten it more?

    Just to make sure we are talking the same hole...I have a 1/2" four sided bolt on top of the steering box, I filled it to there. Didn't see anything like a overflow hole lever? Is that what you mean? Also not sure if there's any way to tighten the seal, I recall it being the usual rubber inside a metel circlular seal.

    Having a nice autumn in Norway?...loved the clips of old cars...how did we get so many American Hot Rods in Norway. "Fantastische".

    John Deere Cornhead grease...interesting we have a new John Deere dealer in town, been meaning to stop there to get filters for my tractor...need to put her to bed for the winter.

    Steering Box Lube & leaks

    O.K. , first & foremost : grease will wreck the box ! it cannot possibly get into the recirculating balls so they'll run dry and wear fast .

    Use gear oil or Pennrite Steering box lube , it's *almost* grease (super thick) but actually flows a little bit .

    Anyways , often when installing a new seal , the shaft's splines cut tiny furrows into the seal's lip causing it to weep ~ that's why you're supposed to either use the special tool (!! $$$ !!) or , carefully wrap the splined area of the shaft with electrical tape before you know the new seal home .

    GM seems to have the best quality seals , I posted the PN some years back , go to Chevy Dealer and ask for 1970 C/10 manual steering shaft seal , about $10 the last time I bought one .

    All this assumes you took the time to carefully wash the box Hospital Clean & observe the oil is in fact , leaking past the output shaft before panicing & going in for repairs ....... :rolleyes:

    If you can't find the seal P/N let me know and I'll dig 'round for it .

    Thanks Nate!! Yeah, I did panic...or more like barfed!! This truck has really taught me via the school of hard knocks. Some of you may re-call the miss that defied all logic. It was a Worn Cam Shaft, I swopped my old spare 235 into it. It wants to run..I think.

    I hadn't put many miles on the spare engine and then worked on the Parking brake. Got that finished and now the Darn steering unit is leaking again...That was a tough afternoons work the first time! In between there was the learning curve on Dual carbs.

    I feel like a vet on this site as this 1953 truck is going on 2 years, before that the 47' was almost 5 years. How time fly's?? Thanks guys.

    The 53 took 3 1/2 years.....my truck took 4 months......then the next 5 years.....still going.

    Is Penrite available in USA?

    Nate, i think Penrite is the stuff. But it is a Brit/NZ/Aussie thing.:confused: Do you buy it here somewhere in the US?:D

    Yes but , I just use 90W Gear Oil.....

    If the dripping bugs you , use some STP or Badahl's Motor Honey .
