[updated:LAST EDITED ON Feb-11-04 AT 05:23 PM (CST)]My 65 C10 w/230 3 on the tree will not shift from 2nd to 1st unless i am driving under 10mph. Is this by design or by error? Either way is there a way to fix? It kinda suxs that i have to almost stop to downshift when i make a turn. Is there anything i can do to fix this? oh, i can shift from 1st to 2nd and back and forth from 2nd to 3rd with NO problem. This is only happening when i go from 2nd to 1st.

Sounds like the clutch isnt adjusted right or the trans syncros are about wore out

Hmm, my Tranny guy told me that some of these 3-speeds are not a syncro-mesh. And that you have to almost come to a stop to go from 2nd to 1st. And have to be at a dead stop to go into reverse. (Of course)
My tranny does the same thing. 3rd to 2nd no problem, 2nd to 1st no way. He said that just the way the were designed.

Duno, I don't even know what type of fluid to put back in mine. So take it for what its worth.

Ya, as far as I know, they are not synchromesh.

You could try double-clutching and rev to match the RPM, or, as I do in one of my cars that likes to argue with me, just shove in the clutch, rev to match, and then down shift.

In case you are not familiar with the concept, all you have to do is rev the engine to approximately whatever the RPM is that you will be at when in 1st gear to rev match.

For example, if you are downshifting to 1st at 20 MPH, determine what RPM you would be at in 1st gear when going 20 MPH. If you are at 5000 RPM in 1st gear at 20 MPH, then, when downshifting from 2nd to 1st at 20 MPH you would need to double-clutch, or clutch like I mentioned above and rev to 5000 RPM before letting the clutch out.
(I'd highly recommend practicing at lower speeds first until you get the smoothness down).
