So I finally decided it was time to adjust my valves. I haven't put too many miles since the rebuild, but it has been well over five years. I knew the lifters were noisy, but I never realized that they were that far out of adjustment. I set them to .006 for intake and .013 for exhaust. I didn't check them, but it seemed like they were set to .020 for both. Its been long enough that I really don't remember what I did. Man, that 235 runs much quieter than I have ever heard it. There is still a bit of lifter tick, but absolutely nothing like it was. It almost makes me uneasy. The interesting thing I found was that I had to readjust my idle air screw to smooth it out. I guess I'll soon see how it performs.
Thanks for the reminder on the timing, Nate. That one slipped my mind... No need for the dwell, though. I'm running Langdon's mini HEI. Perfect spark, every time...right?
HEI = Perfect Dwell Yep ! . Just for grins , I hooked an old Dwell Meter to a GM HEI and guess what ? 33° on the money ! SWEET ! .
Langdons mini Hei install ? Bought the same device from Tom langdon this winter and wanna install it very soon. Do have any practical advice concerning install ? Martinius. Martinius- Actually, installing the HEI from Tom Langdon isn't any different than installing any distributor. Just be careful to take note where the rotor is pointing and be sure to install the new one pointing the same direction. Let us know how it works out!
HEI Install Just remember that the oil pump drive slot can be tricky to line up , beware of the dizzy stopping 13M or so too far out ~ . Keep at it , some drop right in , others you have to pull it out a few times and move the oil pump drive with a l o n g flat bladed screw driver so it lines up correctly ~ the dizzy needs to turn a few degrees as it slides home those last few MM . Timing remains the same , ball on pointer dead nuts @ 600 RPM or less . If you're using a true HEI with coil in it's cap , open the spark plug gaps to AT LEAST .045" ! use a wire typ gauge for this , & FEEL THE POWER ! you'll be amazed . I just did this to my wheezy old 250 CID engine and WOW . .
