i picked up an alternator for my '63 230 at the local parts house, and yep, its the right one, BUT, with the belt on the alternator, it does not line up with the water pump.

Rough guess, the belt is out of line about 1/4" .

is this gonna cause problems? premature wear? noise? belt breakage?

I can't move the alternator any, the bottom bracket won't allow it.

Can I pull the alternator pulley and place spacers behind it to bring the belt in line?

    Ideas?

You need to put spacers on the bracket it self. That will line it up. I used a few washers and I was able to add or subtract the washers until it was right.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Apr-20-04 AT 01:27 AM (CST)]Is the water pump pully a one or two belt ? AND, is the alternator belt on the groove closest to the engine block?

It would not have been the first time I threaded a belt onto the wrong groove ! ;)

OR, check behind the water pump pully for a spacer. If one or two is in there, remove it/them.

i'm brain dead after fighting a leaky brake line yesterday...
(was almost to the point of soldering the damned thing)

i don't understand. how do i put spacers on the bracket since the alternator mounts inside the bracket.

if the bracket had slotted holes i could slide it forward a tad on the block.

    Rusty,

If it's out of line by as much as you said, 1/4 inch, then it has to be the wrong bracket, wrong pully on the alternator, or the wrong alternator. With pully alignment 1/4 inch is a lot !

hey guys, a little ingenuity goes a long way.

i double checked the alternator, it was the right one.

after staring at it for about an hour or so on Sunday, with beer in hand, i got a bright idea.

i measured how far off the belt was from being out of alignment with the water pump pulley, pulled the alternator off, took a grinding wheel and ground off 1/4 of metal off the front where the bolt slides thru.

this gave me just enough "front room" to line up the belt, put a spacers on the back side of the alternator, reinstalled and PERFECT alignment.

wish it was all the easy

Yes that would cause some problems
Iwould try your old pulley or a different one.
I'm not sure if I would try the spacers for saftey reasons
