I need to rebuild

I own a 64 fleetside shortbed C10 with a 283 V8 and I have come to the conclusion that I need to rebuild my engine. I have oil droplets coming out of my exhaust and am blowing smoke like crazy. The problem is that I don't know too much about vehicles and am trying to learn using this truck. I've done minor repairs myself however I don't feel comfortable enough to do this rebuild on my own, so I'm enlisting the help of a mechanic that I've known for many years.

Here's the deal though. Since I don't know too much about what needs to be done, I was wondering if you all had any suggestions or things I could read in order to learn more about what needs to be done in order to make the rebuild a suggest. Please let me know any things I should keep in mind and let me know what you think about the process. Thanks.

    My 2 Cents...

The crate replacement will most likely be a more cost effective solution for you.

If you are interested in " learning " there are a number of books on the subject. Try an Internet Search. Take the old motor and stick it under a tarp in a corner of the garage. Do your reading and get back to it over the winter as a foul weather project.
