Working on basic cleaning and painting of parts while frame gets sand blasted. Any problem with painting the steering hubs? Any area to avoid (other than the obvious inner bearing and threaded areas). Anybody use POR15 on them? Second question- I am trying to detach the sides of the bed from the end piece. Are these hacked, sawed, chiseled or what? Are they spot-welded? Any suggestions would be appreciated. https://talk.classicparts.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=9669&d=1339458487 Thanks, Haasman
Shouldn't be an issue painting the hubs. Just tape off the parts that shouldn't have paint on them. The rear sill should come out of the stack pockets with a little persuasion. They were not spot welded to the bedsides. They were held in place with bolts and nuts. I assume that you have already removed the bed bolts from the rear sill. A well placed piece of 2x4 and a hammer ought to do the trick. Don't forget that you can always upgrade to a BFH! Hope that helps! Ken
Parts Those are Spindles , hubs are the rotating thing with the bearings inside . Yes , paint them gloss black, POR-15 sounds good *but* if you get any in where the shims go , you'll go crazy trying to remove it so mask really well . The rear cross piece is welded , I like to use a bit of old leaf spring ground down to make a sheet metal spot weld chisel , this will separate it with minimal bending .
A Family List So I'll (for once) ty to be polite but it's really called a big FRACKING hammer . AKA : Carburator Wrench .
I taped off my spindles and cleaned them up in the blasting cabinet... then painted them with KBS Coatings' Rust Seal and Blacktop paint. I'm very happy with the results. I also replaced the king pins and grease zerks while I was at it. Damon
OK, now a HUB question Anybody paint their hubs? I will be attaching front disks to the hub so my guess is I don't want to paint the mating surfaces? OK to paint hubs or just cover them with some sort of metal protective stuff? I also discovered a paper gasket between the old hub and its drum cover. I was going to use anti-sieze between the new disk and the hub. Thoughts? Haasman
Hey, Haasman - I can't seem to upload a photo from my phone, but my hubs are painted. I had my regular mechanic press the studs in and turn the rotors when I installed the disk brakes. It appears that he painted the entire hub (except for the bearing races). I never asked him, but I assume the mating surface was painted, too.
