I haven't been able to figure out why the exhaust smells so bad on my 327. I bought it years ago from someone who swapped it out for a BBC but he didn't have any issues with it. Not sure how long it sat before I bought it, but I didn't install it for a couple of years later (bought the motor before I found the truck). I stored it covered outside but did notice some water in the oil during the install. I changed it but have noticed a little smoke & a pungent odor. I came across someone who rebuilds early Camaros. He has a 305 out of a 93 Z28 with 40K miles that he wants to trade. I know I can have mine rebuilt, but this is free. Yes, not as much power as the 327 but I'm not planning on racing anyone. What do you think?

There is nothing about an engine itself that can make an odor. What the engine is burning certainly can. Old gas, oil, or a crudded up exhaust system can all make a stench. If it's not going through excess oil then the 305 will smell exactly the same on the same gas and through the same exhaust. When catalytic converters first were used the exhaust smelled like rotten eggs but they worked around this problem. The 327 is one of my all time favorite engines so my view is a bit slanted I'm sure.

I'm with Evan! Stick with the 327. (I'd love to find a 283 to get right for whenever my228 gives it up.)

The 327 will always be better than the 305, that's why someone wants to trade you out of it. Also if your truck has bad breath you might want to try a little Listerine in the gas tank.:D:D lol just kidding....

    That's a good one!
    The odor smells like gasoline.
