I am still considering my options for a transmission. Most likely will go with a 700R4, but would also like to explore 5-speed manual options. Does anyone know of some options that would easily bolt into my 64? What about ease of clutch setup?

Please post any info you find on this subject, I am in the same position. I need a better tranny to handle more speed but I don't want to give up the clutch and a 5-speed seems the perfect choice. I have talked to a guy who says that the GM A833 w/ fourth gear overdrive is the way to go but have not had any luck finding such a beast in any boneyards or on E-bay.
From what I understand the problem is not fitting the tranny in its where the shifter is located, is this your understanding also?

The location of the shifter can be a problem. Sometimes they are too close to the front of the seat (depending on shift lever style) and other times the shifter seems somewhat low and away from the driver. I had a 57 1/2 ton with a 327-car four speed and this was the case with it. I have only had the original pickup 4-speed in my '64.
