Many GM rear ends used 3 bolts with tapered ends to push a sleeve against the inner race of the front pinion bearing to pre-load the bearing. I think all the ones with torque tubes had them such as AD trucks and my 37 Buick. Question: what did these bolts torque to? I've looked through all my manuals and may just be missing the info but could use a little help here. Pictures show the 3 bolts with locking nuts screwed into the side of the pinion housing. Thank you; Evan

    3 bolts question.

As far as i remember Evan these bolts are ment to keep the bearing sentered aswell in position with the right pressure on the outer sleeve. Does that makes sence ? Martinius.

    Hey Martinius,
Thank you for taking time to think about this. The reason I think the sleeve is meant to preload the bearing is that the end of the set bolt and one end of the sleeve are at 45 degree angles. The other end of the sleeve that contacts the bearing is straight. The set bolt screws down onto the tapered end of the sleeve which pushes it toward the bearing. The reason I couldn't find a torque spec for the set bolt is because they use how much torque to turn the pinion shaft, in this case 27-36 lbs/in. Sometimes when I get channel vision I miss the obvious. Thank you; Evan
