Can someone give me a down and dirty about chaning oil in my 1954 chevy truck with 235 engine. Obviously, draining it from the oil pan, but where do you replace the oil at? I popped the oil filter case and oil is filled to about 1/2 inch from the top. Do I replace the oil there after I drain the pan? thanks

Also, when replacing the trans gear how much do I add after I drained it? Some people say to add until just below the plug on the side of the transmission. Thanks

Add oil to the cap in the rocker cover. The oil filter should have a plug in the lower side to drain it. Fill the oil filter also, just make shure the rubber gaskets sit right when you re assemble.......Ask how I know!

    Routine Oil Changes

ALWAYS remove the tranny's filler plug first ! once in a while one will not come out and if you've already drained it , you cannot drive the rig to the Welder's Shop to have him remove the filler plug .

You are correct , slowly pump in EP Gear Oil intil it backs out the filler plug then wait at least 3 minutes for it to flow through the rear bearing and fill the U-Joint cavity , then you should be able to pump in a few more strokes .

Consider adding a 1/2" NPT magnetic drain plug , if you get it later , just put it in the filler plug's hole for now , it'll still collect enough SWARF to scare you next year when you service the tranny again .

I never fill the engine oil filter cavity , I just change the element then perch on the fender with the engine idling and wait to see if it leaks as it self fills .

    YMMV .

Synthetics protect your engine best but , they also weep & seep more out of older engines , this doesn't mean ' synthetic oils cause leaks ' ~ that's ignorant B.S. .
