vent window dilemma - locking device pin?

    Ok making great progress and now have a question about removing the old vent window locking device.

    I have two pics the almost restored vent window and the old one.

    Is the locking dice held on with a pin? How do you best remove and where can I get a new pin?

    See that little hole? There is a roll pin in there. Drive it out. New locks should come with one.

    Thanks. I was thinking of reusing. Where can you bu new ones ? I do not see them on sponsors site.

    Take the old one to the hardware store, they should be able to match it up.

    A REAL hardware store preferably

    Not a big boxer if you can help it. :D

    A small diameter punch will take it out easy peasy

    vent lock

    Thanks, I made a punch out of a nail (ground it flat and tapped it out no problem. As it turns out the old ones will not clean up good enough , so I just ordered new ones.

    One of the things that I am finally getting is projects will take longer than I could ever expect because of time to get parts. Our sponsor seems to have good parts but they seem slow to get parts to UPS.

    Glad I am mostly retired so time is less of an issue.

    Again I appreciate a great deal the advise and help!

    WHen setting out on a new project, figure out the known costs of parts needed, then double the budget and you will only be a little short in the end. Figure out your time and triple it, but don't be dissapointed if even this isn't enough.

    Enjoy the process, don't be afraid to leave off on one project to work on another, when you come back it will work out better.

    I have approximately $13 in hard parts for my truck...last time I sorta tallied...I beg, borrow, swap, steal and deal. If I added up all the little stuff, nuts and bolts, stuff here and there, It would be a hell of a lot more. I have been working on it since 2005. I built the main part from Set. 05 to Feb 06, then working ever since.


    The 53 cost around $35K to restore without suspension work.....including labor.

    The 50 I built was around $50K, but ideas changed a few times mid stream, it had all chrome, power everything and leather interior.

    Thanks I get it! My challenge is that i am a novice and don't know what I don't know. I assumed new vents had locks, for example.

    My solution is to have a couple of projects running in parallel so while waiting for parts on one I can work on the other.

    Before pinning your new window locks on, check the shaft for wear or wobble. If the new ones have wobble, you may need to add to the shaft and then file down to shape.

    Either machine a sleeve, or weld on, then file to shape.

    vents done

    Completed the reassembly of the vents. Hardest part was the rivets. Now I am wrestling with the u channel felt and need to install new window channel for the rear and top of the windows. Progress.
