I would like to hear from anyone who has installed a 700R4 in a 64-66 chevy P/u, I have a few questions on linkages etc, please send me an e-mail. Thanks
I also am looking into putting in a 700R4 into my 66. On the linkage Lokar sells a TV cable. The TV cable is used for that tranny. Also with that if you are like me I have an Edlebrock carb and you have to purchase a speciale TV cable bracket for that carb. You transmission bracket will have to be moved. Grind off the rivets to remove the bracket. after the tranny is in place bolt bracket to tranny and drill new holes in frame for bracket. You are also going to have to shorten one of the drive shafts. So far this is all I have figured out. Good luck. Pete
I just had a 700R4 installed in my 65 SWB. Used a corvette converter 2200 stall, nice hard shift from 1st to 2nd. Little trick to crossmember, if you currently have a manual, you can take the crossmember used for the emergency brake, cut the rivets, flip the crossmember over, cut an access hole in center, weld a plate above hole for trans mount bolt, be careful to keep your driveshaft centered. By flipping the member over your emergency brake will still work. You will need to drill new mounting holes in the frame. The shift linkage if using a column selector is a whole other story, mine came from a mid 80's monte had to make a bracket to attach it to the frame, the rod had to be cut, shortened, twisted and rewelded. Took a lot of modifications to make it work, the 700 has a longer throw, than a 350 or 400. Also a tilt column out of a 72 van works very well with very little modification and the key switch is still located in the dash, the wiring harness plugs right in. Don't forget the drive shaft, I was lucky and able to find one that didn't need to be cut, sorry not sure what it came out of had several to pick from.
I would not recommend, or use, the e-brake mounting bracket as a crossmember for an automatic transmission. The transmission and the weight of the motor need more strength than the piece of stamped sheetmetal e-brake support was designed to hold. Use a trans crossmember made to support the transmission. The e-brake bracket kick-up can be cutoff the old support and then welded underneath the new trans crossmember to hook the e-brake up after the conversion. DV
Very good point, a lot of torque is generated at this point, therefore that is why I welded a 1/4" steel plate to this stamped plate for added strength and support. Thanks for bringing that to everyones attention, I may have left that part out. Sure I could have bought an aftermarket cross member made for the conversion, but isn't the fabrication part of the fun? Thanks
well guys I got the 700r4 installed and it runs great,I also install a steering column out of an 83 p/u with tilt what a difference, does anyone know where or how to order the speedo gears in the tail housing to get it to the correct speed on the speedometer,I have 373 rear gears and it appears the speedo is reading faster than im going.
Here is a speedo calculator. As soon as I get back for Korea I'll be installing my new 700R4. Good Luck Pete http://www.700r4.com/speedoCalc/speedocalc.shtml
Thanks for the site,I had always wondered how to figure that kind of stuff out,I got the information I needed and since california is just a little ways from alabama I checked around on the gears, and to my surprise the dealer had them for 6 bucks each.
