I`m running 6 volt.....The 12 volter, sourced from host, looks very different and maybe not as sturdy...maybe because 12 volts requires less amps??

Did you get the origional style switch for our trucks, or the generic hotrod switch?

    Morris,
Welcome aboard and enjoy your ride while here.
If you have currently a 6volt system replace with 6 volt parts.
If you plan on putting new 12 volt wiring harness, elect. wipers, other 12 components and systems in your ride replace then with the 12 volt items.
I switched to 12 some time back and like it but my 56 cj and my 9N tractor are still 6 volt and I like it that way for them.

    Again welcome Aboard,
    Charles

Thanks,CCHARR.....OL'CHEBBY.....altho its labelled for 47-54 trucks,I must have the generic hotrod switch...Don`t remember where I got it,it just appeared on my shelf of "stuff" while I was rummaging around.I just rec`d an original style from host and it is SUBSTANTIALLY better built and matchs my original one perfectly...I think I can get under the dash to replace it,but not sure I can get out!!

HA!!! Man, I know that feeling! And once I get under there, I then have to be able to see what the heck it is I'm working on. Not so easy anymore!
    BTW, WELCOME, Morris!
Any pictures of the truck you are working on?

Pull the knob out and reach under the dash. Feel around for a little button on the switch, push and pull out the knob. Take the bezel loose from the front of the dash and drop the switch out from behind. Make all connections hanging out from under the dash, then do the opposite to put back in. You should be able to do this all without having to go under the dash.

Before you start replacing the switch remove one of the battery cables. Makes for less sparks while you are putzing around under the dash.

    Late Again.......

However I see you're in good hands .

FWIW , once the old switch is off the truck , ever so gently spread the tabs holding it to - gether and take it apart , clean out the old rock hard grease and polish the contacts with metal polish (NEVER sandpaper/emory cloth !) , lightly grease both the contacts and sliding parts and re assemble it and Lo ! it'll be ready for another 50 years of hard service .

Delco Remy used to make really good stuff .

I recently did this on my (12 volt) 1960 C/10 because the headlights were a bit dim , now they're white again.......

Most older switches can be taken apart & serviced .

    Dimmer switch

I have just recently lost the headlights on my 48 fleet master coupe. Very similar to our AD projects.

I figured I was in for Nate's light switch refurb job.

A friend at this past weekend's rod run suggested I check my dimmer.

I clicked the dimmer and viola! Dimmer just sat so long it needed to be clicked a couple of times to make contact.

I plan to take all these pieces apart and check them out as I have time, but sometimes problems are much simpler than they seem.

I also keep fire extinguishers in all of my vehicles.

    Jim
