Hi everyone.. I will soon be getting my c30 frame sandblasted to get it ready for prime and paint. The blaster stated they would prime and paint the frame (of course for a fee) and gave me several options. One was just an epoxy primer, another was primer and chip coat or just primer and gloss black enamel. I asked about por-15, and they stated they could do that too. Does anyone have any advise and/or experiences with this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. ..Russ
OK. First off omit POR-15 as an option. POR-15 is a "rust encapsulator", which means it's made to go "over" rust. Rust won't be your problem because the frame is being blasted. In order to make POR-15 stick to bare metal it needs to be covered with a POR-15 prep coating. The process is pretty expensive for the materials and, if all the rust is removed, pretty unnecessary. Your other options depend on where you are going with your project. If you are doing a restoration, or a street cruiser, intended to be a regular driver, have them prime and shoot it with a semi-flat, ( not gloss ) black. If you want to get fancy with the undercarrage, then have them prime and chip coat it for an epoxy finish coat at a later time or shoot it with the gloss black. DVal
[updated:LAST EDITED ON May-31-05 AT 08:22 AM (CST)]Hi DVal.. Thanks again for the information and the advice. You have helped me with several other questions too.. Could you explain what a Chip Coat is and how it looks? The answer I received from the sand blasters was: "All the snow plow trucks get it done.. it looks nice". I liked your idea of painting the frame with flat black but this makes me wonder why you would paint a chip coat with Gloss black? Also.. my plans for the truck is to make it a nice weekend runner but also to use it for work around the house. I was also looking into making the bed dump. Thanks.. Russ
" Could you explain what a Chip Coat is and how it looks? The answer I received from the sand blasters was: "All the snow plow trucks get it done.. it looks nice". " It's more than likely it's a clear coat, but I can't speak for your blaster guys. As them again, WHAT IS A CHIP COAT ?? "I liked your idea of painting the frame with flat black but this makes me wonder why you would paint a chip coat with Gloss black?" The frame comes from the factory with "semi-flat" black.. And it looks a lot better than flat. " I was also looking into making the bed dump. " I can't help you there.. Let me know what you find out. I have a kid that has trouble getting up in the morning..
