Hey guys I wanted to ask if someone has some pictures of the 4 speed Muncie SM420 (Granny) or the SM465 transmission the way they should be installed on the chevy bellhouse and the torque tube ? What difference is there between the transmissions in use or spesifications ? Thank you in advance Martinius.
I haven't taken a picture of the 420 but I think it bolts to the bell housing just like a three speed. It is for the closed shaft. If I got it right I think the 465 is for an open shaft and bolts to any of the modern bell housings both I-6 and V8's. Here is a 465 bolted to a sbc V8; note the wide spread trans to engine mounting bolts. The earlier 420 has a much smaller mount pattern.
Virus checkup ! Thanks fore the PM Evan. You could run a virus checkup on your pc with Windows security Essentials or what you have ! Some advertizements in websites plant these errors in your computer as the problem occures again Then clean the whole lot with CCleaner Click the start button , scroll to system and run a windows hardisk cleaning aswell Try again to let windows repair your system by reinstalling the missing files , use the Windows internall reinstall program. Restart the computer and try again. I `ll think you can download the cure program on the internet at Download.com or from the Windows offisial download site. Good luck Martinius.
Muncie SM420 Tranny It was made to suit both closed and open drive lines . I'm still trying to give away an SM465..... . The SM465 is ony 12" long , this means very compact and easy to put into your old Jeep or whatnot .
Install SM420 Nate The SM 420 tranny fits normally right into the stock GM bellhouse with the inputshaft counting 10 splines and mainshaft rear 10 splines aswell , but does it needs anything else like an adapter at the backside to fit the torque tube collar connection ? I am not satisfied with the Saginaw today as it still makes noice and i considder buying a Novac SM 420 turn key transmission ? A picture from the SM 420 would have done the trick Martinius.
No Pictures Here Matinus ; The 420 was made to fit both open and closed drivelines , the rear plate on it it changed depending on which you want . If the current Saginaw is too noisy , it needs a proper rebuild . prolly it was run too long with worn cluster shaft bearings and or impropery shimmed cluster gear end float , this causes mis alingment of the gear contact faces with the resulting wear and ruins the gears proper from ever being fully silent again. When rebuilding , it is critical to replace the gears in meshing pairs from the same manufacturer else there will forever be some whine sound . Be aware the SM420 is a three speed tranny with an additional compound low you'll never use . it also shifts ponderously ,a great heavy duty tranny , not so much for high speed work like I think you want .
SM 420 Transmission Evan thanks a lot for the information. Evan mentioned that the SM 420 tranny normally fits right into the stock GM bellhouse with the inputshaft counting 10 splines and mainshaft rear 10 splines aswell , but does it needs anything else like an adapter at the backside to fit the torque tube collar connection ? I am not satisfied with the Saginaw tranny today as it still makes noice in 3- 4 gear and i am considdering buying a SM 420 transmission instead ? Nate what is the excact differance in trans gears between the 2 granny trannies ? A picture from the SM 420 would have done the trick Martinius.
pictures of my sm420 this tranny came out of a 1950 1 ton, I took the tail shaft assembly from my half ton SM420 and switched it right out. Because my original 420 had likely several hundred thousand miles on it going on how worn all the other mechanicals were when I took it apart, this tranny pictured came out of an AD with 18,000 original miles. Cost me $150 US and a drive half way across Texas and back. The second photo is of the bell housing from the underside without the tranny. Note the piliot shaft is loose from one of the trannies and being used to hold the clutch etc. in place. Nate, the ground has been moved to the tranny since the pic was last posted. Jim
Photos SM 420 Very greatfull for the photos Jim . This tranny looks good . Do you know the tooth count of the gears perhaps ? Maybe you have a photo of the tailpeace ass. of your SM Tranny ? I need to know how it looks like incase i have to get that part aswell bisides the tranny. Thanks on beforehand Martinius.
Aggie decals Bill I am a class of '75 Texas Aggie. My bride is a graduate of a liberal school in Austin (this makes her and I have to agree on a number of important issues). We have mutually agreed to not have to ride around with alma mater stickers on our cars. She doesn't look under my 54, so I can get away with this. We have a "house divided" flag we hang out front a bunch in the fall. This is enough. Aggies all across the world are grateful for the football coach we were so fortunate to recruit from your UH football program a year ago. I was very relieved that you walked away from your rollover incident. The Cosmic Dust Devils have a song on one their albums titled "Robert Rolled His Pickup Truck Again", kinda reminds me of a lot of rollover stories. I hope you find a good old truck soon and best regards. Gig em! Jim
Thanks fore the great advice Nate ! Nate I have just bought a very nice Saginaw 4 speed transmission again paid 125 Euro and i am going to rebuild that one , just replacing the short main shaft and use all the other parts from the new kit i still have lying around. The main difference between the two Saginaw transgears is the different helicut reverse idler gear wich has a stop and and there is an extra gear on the cluster aswell. Most likely a later modell with better performance. This spring i am going to install the 2 legged carlift in my shelter and later work on my truck again. Looking forward to that. Thanks fore all your good advice Martinius.
Muncie 420 rockcrusher trans. I just took out my four speed trans and did the t5 swap. I don't know what to do with this so.....pm me if anyone out there has any Ideas.......trans has 71000miles on it...
Pto Jim Did you take the PTO off the trans where the Aggie Cover is? Might be a stupid question but how hard is it to get it off if it comes off. I have a trans out of an old grain truck in my half ton. Would not mind sheading the weight and possible place to spuge trans fluid. Papy
My Advice , Rockcrusher Etc. 1st. & foremost : MY advice is WORTHLESS ! (that's why it's free) . 2nd. : the Muncie M420 tranny IS NOT a ' Rock Crusher ' as it has quieter Helical gears ~ Rock Crushers all have straight cut gears and , if my feeble mind recalls , an alloy case to boot . As far as the P.T.O. , just remove the (? 6 ?) bolts and don't be underneath it when it plops down as it weighs at least a ton and will HURT you if it gets the chance . Slap on the tin P.T.O. Delete Cover using some Permatex " The Right Stuff " and you're good to go .
I have the Saginaw 4 speed Patrick recommends and it is very devine indeed. Even with my 216...85 HP motor. If you have noise just rebuild it, its a great combo!
