Iam would like to convert to a disc brake front end on the 62.can anyone tell me what will fit. Thanks
Click on the online store tab above and look in the brake shoes section under 60-66 truck. There are several options listed there, ranging from around $125 to $800. Early Classic has a kit available in the $1000 range. If you dont mind losing your torsion bars, you can swap in an entire front crossmember from a later('71-'87) truck with front discs. There are likely some other methods that escape me right now, but there are lots of options, to meet your budget. Try to stick with truck brakes, instead of the smaller car style conversions. Whatever you do, remember, they're your brakes, and they have to stop YOU.
" Try to stick with truck brakes, instead of the smaller car style conversions. " Do Not TRY, Definatly stick with truck brakes. Smaller car rotors will yield NO improvement over well maintained drums brakes. DVal
If you have a 75 frame with disk brakes take the entire front crossmember, suspension, centerlink, tie rod ends,, EVERYTHING. The crossmember will bolt to the 62 with onlt a few holes to drill. You will need to relocate the idler arm from the 75 on the 62 frame, but thats just lining it up, drilling a few holes and bolting it in. If that 75 has power steering take that too. Purchase a REZ adapter and mount the PS box to the frame and use the PS pitman arm. Save some time by rebuilding all the components now before you install. New springs, control arm bushings and tie rod ends will make that 62 drive like new. Don't forget to inspect and rebuild the brake pads and rotors too. DVal
RE: 66frameswap My buddy has a 66 with a bad frame and would like to swap frames any ideas? He has a line on a 78 long box.
RE: 66frameswap Frame swapping is a lot more work. Mounting points for the cab and radiator core support are different. Also Long bed frames cannot be swapped into a short bed without sectioning the frame in the middle. Fabrication skills need to be at the top of the game. Look for a replacement frame from the early 60's. They are around.. DV
