Hello all, I have a 61 chevy stepside pickup and need to do something to the body. It really not in that bad of shape but surface rust is starting to appear. I went ahaed and sanded down the hood and put some spray can primer on to stop it. I was planing on wet sanding it and doing it agian. Due to the fact that me and the wife had Twin boys about a month ago i can not afford to have it done at a body shop right now. Am i on the right track with what i am doing for now. Thanks for any help you may be able to give.
RE: Spray can primers, Will it work Congratulations on the new arrivals !! You can keep up with the surface rust with rattle can primers and block sanding. When you get down to the final coat of primer, remember to seal it. Primer will absorb mosture over time, kinda like a diaper, (sorry, couldn't help myself ), and the rust will reappear through the primer. The prime coat will need to be sealed with a finish coat. Rattle can will work good with that too. Mask off the areas you are working on into managable areas and the finished product will look better. It will still look patchy, but not like a free form deer hunter camafloge motif.. Congrats again on the twins ! Nothing beats being a Dad ! Dennis
RE: Spray can primers, Will it work Time is of the essence when exposing bare metal after rust has been removed. As soon as a finish is removed the corrosion process accelerates dramaticlly. As a last resort a rattle can will do. Try to find one with an acid etch that will lock into the surface. PPG has a professional line of spray can products designed for small quick applications. Good Luck Chris
RE: Spray can primers, Will it work 66 KUSTOM Do remember though when you do go to paint with automotive paint that you will want to remove all the rattle can primer because 75% of the time you will end up having a reaction when the two primers (rattle can and automotive primer)meet together. Unfortunatly Ive had that happen to me once upon a time. Good luck and congragulations!!:7 66KUSTOM

The rattle can stuff should be considered a temp fix until a correct and compatable primer and finish is applied. DVal
RE: Spray can primers, Will it work Hi, I have a 1964 C-10 chevy fleetside, and the body is good, but the rust was starting to get to it, so I sanded her down and primered the whole truck inside and out, and let me tell you it looks 10 times better than it did and it will keep the rust away as long as you get rid of all the rust. if I can get your E-mail dress Ill send some pictures, PS it took about 25-30 cans just for the outside

I know this is bringing back an old topic, but has anyone every heard using some sort of rustoleum product and rolling it on? About 2 years ago I read an article on and say some pics of someone who had done this. It wasn't a showroom finish, but I have to say it looked good for the less than $100 the guy said it cost. Didn't know if anyone heard of this.
Hey 66 c10, I dont have an answer for you but just wanted to say hi from Greenwell Springs, La. I'm sure someone will have an answer for you. You will find some good info around here. By the way what color is your truck? Might have seen you around. Jeremy
yea, I saw you were from LA yesterday when I was searching around. As for what color my truck is....well depends on what side you are looking at. Basically it is primer gray from the cab back and then a combo of red/gray and just a hint of it's orginal green from the cab forward, oh yea, it has painted primer gray wheels. I'll try to get a pic up when I get the chance. I basically drive it around Denham Springs and Baton Rouge on weekends. I'm not real worried about how it looks on the outside (looks and feels pretty awesome from the driver's seat!)
(looks and feels pretty awesome from the driver's seat!) Thats why I havent torn mine to the frame yet. Having too much fun driving it!! I know it will take time to restore it, I'll just drive it untill I get money to restore it. If that ever happens!!
Judging by your avatar, yours looks pretty good. I know how you feel, when I start thinking about tearing mine apart, I talk myself out of it cause I know I won't be able to drive it. I do think I am going the Rat Rod way with it, but I am sure this will change.
Yea, its in decent shape. But you always want to do stuff to it. I think the rat rods are cool looking.
Last weekend there was an episode of "Trucks" where they used a roll on primer to do some body repare.
