Alright Nate, I just went to Harbour Freight and picked up a HVLP gravity feed gun with a built in pressure regulator, paint strainers & a filter all for under $50. Since used the Rusto filler primer I'll stick with the paint as well but I'm still on the fence on the color.
Black with some nice clean graphics, similar to the newer HD trucks, http://special-reports.pickuptrucks...cks-born-in-detroit-dressed-in-milwaukee.html
You have to be very careful with graphics on these trucks, keep it classic. Too modern kills it in my opinion, but I'm old school. Just black it with some pinstripes.
Color Choices Who's paying for it ? . THAT PERSON gets to choose . I hope you don't choose one of those modern kiddy colors but it's YOUR GMC so go for it and have fun . Me , I loved my white '49 3100 but then it was a working truck in the Desert so keeping me cool inside was # 1 . You can't go wrong with Forester Green (I prolly chose the wrong shade) and some pin striping or door lettering , that would make that L O N G MOTOR stand out more too ! . Gotta show up the BOWTIE GUYS every chance you get , knowhutimean ? .
PPG color "Moosgruen", a Mercedes truck color is very close to Juniper green, it is what I painted the 53 with.
black! especially with those rims you have. black and chrome never goes out of style. But seriously as nate said you are paying you chose!!!
Watch it Zig Always wanted a gray truck with black fenders...and that's what is setting in tHe garage! Maybe it'll run to the fishing hole one of these years. I agree with Nate paint it ANY color you want. If someone doesn't like it tell them to go somewhere else. Papy's
Black it is!! Well, I decided to stay with black..........gloss black!!!! But I do have issues, not with the paint itself, but with the cheap@$#% Harbor Freight gun. I never could get the paint flow quite right. Halfway through the first side, the *%$#)% fell apart! Literally!! The flow set screw came flying of the back of the gun! I had no Idea where the darned thing went so I made a mad dash back to the store to get a new one. I thought that I'd just buy the the $15 gun and just get the set screw rather than buying another $40 one because they looked just alike..... NOT!! Got home and they were totally different! Didn't want to drive back to the store so I figured I may as well try it. It was also at this point that I realized that I'd also forgot to use the water filter I'd bought the first time. Man what a lethal combination!!! The gun leaked paint like a sieve and the filter leaked water and ruined my hard work. The paint it self looks AWESOME, if you don't look at the obvious air bubbles and the globs of dripped paint!!! (which also ruined the garage floor!!) Gonna sand down the bad spots ans do it again, this time with a better gun. Went to Home Depot today and found a much better one. Will keep you posted on the progress!
What paint did you use? I've used the HF guns several times without any problems, guess they changed them again.
Lookin' pretty good, Robert. I'm painting my truck as well, and I bought an HVLP gun from Northern tool. Having pretty good success with it, but I'm clearly no pro painter. I decided very early on that I'm doing everything I possibly can myself, so paint I did... BTW, a painter friend told me to spray a 'light' coat, (just enough to barely cover most of the color), wait 10-20 minutes, and add a 'full' coat and you'll have fewer runs and sags. Hope this helps a little. Bill
Henry, I used the Rustoleum Professional. I've heard others say they had good luck with them too but the ones I had were worthless! Bilbo, good looking truck! I like the two tone colors. Almost painted mine Silver & black! I didn't have any issues with runs. The gun literally dripped paint from the tip after I made a pass.
That stinks~ You are a brave man to paint the whole thing in one shot. Buffing may or may not help? That is going to be one attention grabbing truck when it's all done, me thinks! Good luck with the rest of it. I will be picking my gun up from Home Depot.
Thanks Zig! It really wasn't that bad once I got the hang of it. Just wish I'd shopped around a little before I bought the gun!
