I have seen many posts for this question, but just to clarify.....

I have a 350 engine with a 350 turbo in my truck, my top speed highway is around 60..... I was thinking about going 3:73..... but now I read that I may want to go 3:08? I want a high top speed but without losing a WHOLE lot of power..... Also how do I tell what differential I am working with now? I have the 12 bolt rearend not sure if its dana or not, anybody know a website with info for me?

Try jacking up the rear of the truck. Spin the drive shaft and count how many times around it goes until the tire makes one rotation. Also if you are looking for a little more highway friendly truck try a 700R4 swap. It's worth every penney.

THATS A VERY GOOD QUESTION, I TOO COULD USE SOME HELP WITH MY REAR END. :p WHEN I PICKED UP MY TRUCK THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD SWAPPED IN A 12BOLT AND TOLD ME (FROM WHAT I REMEMBER) THAT IT WAS OUT OF AN IMPALLA. I DONT KNOW WHAT YEAR. ID REALLY LIKE TO KNOW THE INFORMATION I WILL NEED TO KNOW TO INDENTIFY THE REAR END SO I CAN INSTALL DIFFERENT GEARS AND WHAT NOT. IM NEW WITH CHEVYS, DO THEY MAKE SEVERAL DIFFERENT 12BOLT REAR ENDS OR ARE YOU PRETTY SAFE SAYING A 12BOLT IS A 12BOLT AS FAR AS THE PUMPKINS GO? PLEASE HELP THOSE OF US WITH REAR END PROBLEMS.
    THANK YOU

The 12 bolt from a passenger car is different from a truck. The carrier from one will not go into the other. Further, the early 60's (up to 1964) 12 bolts are different from the 65 - 72's. and, likewise, the carriers from those will not interchange as well as differences in the axles.

You will need to find the serial number, probably located on one of the axle tubes, to track down what you have.

THANKS DENNIS, I FOUND A WEBSITE THAT EXPLAINS HOW TO INDENTIFY THE MANUFACTURER, THE DATE, AND AXLE CODE. HAVE YOU EVER CAME ACROSS A SITE THAT TELLS YOU WHICH VEHICLE OR VEHICLES A PERTICULAR AXLE HAS COME OUT OF USING THIS INFORMATION?
    THANKS AGAIN,
    YOUR FRIEND, 66 KUSTOM

I'm going way back in the foggy areas of the old brain but I think the old Hollander interchange books would help. Back before all the salvage yards were computerized it was their bible. You would find the page that contained the information from your part and it would give you a number in the back of that section. This number would then give you all the vehicles that used that part plus other info about it, like dimensions, ratios, spline count, etc. This has all undoubtably been computerized but that means it could be on the moon for old cave men like me.

Any of the differentials from 66 thru 72 will bolt in. the 67 - 72 will be about 1 1/2 inches wider that will require a wheel with a backspacing change.
