I have the stock rear end in a apache C-20 with 456 gears and would like to put some higher gears in it. I have found out that you can not change the gears in this rear end. can anyone suggest a rear end that would keep me with the 8 lug wheels but some higher gears or a rear end I can put some higher gears in.
Higher gears meaning 514/1 which would make you go slower but able to climb high mountains and haul heavy load on a single clutch release, or something around a 370 something or 342/1 as I have which came out of a 78 one ton?
Final Drive Ratios Actually ; " higher " gears means lower numerically and " low " gears means higher teeth counts.... Kinda counter intuitive , isn't it ? .
your right I mean lower gears I was thinking about 373 somewhere around there just was some gears I can put in or do I have to change the hoe rear end
Final Drive Ratio Well ; You have the 8 lug rear end so I imagine that makes ratio changes easier , the whole center section (AKA : Pumpkin / Chunk Etc.) comes out the front of the rear axle , correct ? . If so , you may be able to find a 4.11 ratio easily , else have your gears replaced and set up by a rear end shop , this co$t$ more but usually gives vastly better results . IIRC your ' banjo ' has fairly specific spring perch locations but , many are making Hot Rods out of older rigs so a good used rear axle complete may be affordable , you'll just have to search diligently for it.
