I have a 1947 Chevy pickup window regulator that rolls itself back up (in a hurry) due to spring tension. I myself have not worked with this regulator and I'm not sure of the issue, the spring is intact and not broken. Is it possible someone along the way has taken this thing apart and reassembled with the spring backwards or something? Any ideas are appreciated.
It won't once the weight of the window and the drag of the felt is applied to it. On the long one piece windows like your 47 this is a good thing. If you need it in a certain position to install just drill an 1/8 or so hole through the curved gear sprocket and put a temporary pin in it. The inner end of the spring fits in a slot and the outer end hooks to a tab. Some have two tabs where the spring can be hooked for more or less tension but I have not seen this on an AD. It is impossible to wind and extra round on the spring---it will coil bind first. I have two springs from after market regulators that are real wimps if you're interested.
