I have read many of you said to go with the 215-85-R16 on my 54 chevy truck. Can anyone give me the brand ad type you used for this size Also, I have 6 lug rears ad 5 lug front. Can anyone give me a size, type and brand for the 5 lug fronts as well. This is the last thing I need to have it road ready. Knock on wood. Thanks
It all depends on the "look" you want. Remember that original tires on these trucks were tall and skinny. If it were me, here's the first thing that I'd do. I'd measure the rim width of the 6 lug back wheels and the 5 lug front wheels to see if they are the same. I'd also measure to see if the offset on both rims were the same. If so, they will accept the same tire and look the same when mounted. Next, determine what type of hubcap you want to use and see if both wheels will accomodate that. There are aftermarket clips you can install if you want the original "dog dish" hub caps. Now the tires! Do you want radials or the good old bias ply tires? Radials? Good answer! Go to Diamondback Tires website and look at their offerings. They have way cool widewhites as well as blackwall tires. They even have one that they say is the perfect replacement tire for AD trucks. Research other vintage tire websites as well, you might find something you like better. Something to think about! Ken
I have our sponsors six lug chrome rims with chrome moons. I bought blackwall radial tires from Wally world. My only criteria was from a brand that would have been in existance when AD's were new. I got Goodyears or Goodrich's. I could not find a radial to fit my original 4" rim too well. This combo improved my ride phenomenally. I have bias wide whitewalls that came on my 53' and can't wait for them to wear-out. Just another perspective. Flashlight
I'm still in the planning phases, but hoping to use these artillery wheels from wheel vintiques: http://www.wheelvintiques.com/index.php/artillery-17-series.html But, the 16" version only comes 5" wide; and the 215/85/16 tires I've seen specify 5.5 - 7" wheel widths. What gives?
Tires If it helps I went to a truck tire shop and got 7.5x 16 which are tires for a RV type vehicle, radials rated for heavy loads, MS. brand is Ridge Runner not a good right up from the internet but I like them. All on my stock six lug 16 x 6 inch rims, give me the look I want which is close to stock.
My 2Cents I just bought LT215x85, R16s from NTB locally. They were economical, (buy 3 get the 4th free at the time), and included installation and balance for 148.99 ea. They are Mesa A/P II. Load range E, (10 ply equivalent). They look real good and are similar to the original type. Since I'm not a real stickler for originality, they're probably gonna' be great for my truck. I haven't driven much on them yet, though. Hope this helps a little. BTW, Are you the one who posted a picture some time back of your Yellow truck covered in yellow leaves, from an upstairs window? If so, I'd like to see that again. It was a really good "calendar" photo.
I like tires I have been running LT215 85 r 16 uniroyal D range tubeless tires on my truck for a decade. Had a valve stem problem once. I like them, and they look skinny when pinched in the 16 x 4" stock rims. Jim
Hi, Jim! I have some Western Auto tires on mine! They still hold air and have plenty of tread! I'm thinking of running them just around town, until I have taken my mom for a spin, at least.
ziggy? Howdy Zig, I read you all a lot, and I am enjoying my old truck when I get a chance. I am not building any vehicles, buying new mostly. One of my evening pastimes is reading this page. many of you are like old friends, and the site can be enlightening, informative and reluctantly entertaining. kinda like being on the porch with the guys and talking smart. Without going anywhere. Am waiting for you to get the Kansas City Special on the road so you can give Jamaal Charles a ride to his hometown when you come see us. enjoy Jim
First set of tires I bought for this truck were Continentals, M&S P235/70R16 then when I had to go to steel rims v/s the billet, I have Cooper M&S LT 225/75R16. Hope this helps, Nate had posted some time way back on the tall tires which are needed to drive the highways and be safe. Charles
Paul, Those tires on your G most likely will last a long time, hows the truck and summer fishing coming along? Charles
Good to know! I always wonder when we lose a contributor/commentator. Glad to know you're still with us, Jim! Any good fishing pictures to share with us? You know I would love nothing more than to drive Jamaal down your way! THAT would be awesome!!! Who knows~~~ Just keep an adult beverage handy.
Well... School has pulled the rug out from under my feet~ Back to my career. Hopefully I will get the paint and paint everything over Labor Day weekend. Then it will go slowly from there. Fishing will take a back seat to working on the truck. I really want to get it rolling ASAP... $$$ will play into this as well, of course. My wife might be finally starting a job here soon that will help in this area.
