Thanks Russ for the info on what you have been using. I ordered the one piece gasket from Clifford Performance, could not find one on Tom?s Stovebolt site. I talked to the guys at Clifford?s they told me to watch out for the length of the bolts being used because sometimes that is the problem. The threaded hole in the head is only about a 1/2 inch and if the bolt is to long it will never get tight enough. So I have to order grade 8 and make sure the length is correct. Charles
I really like the items they sell. Today the gasket arrived by ups and it is a thick gasket compared to the felpro ones I have been buying. Still have to get the grade eight bolts. But for now I've got to get all that stuff out of the way.
Gasket details? Charles could you give us some details about the gasket Your gonna use ? I whas thinking of the way it fits and how thick it is ? Maybe a Picture when Your gonna install it and the result of the fresh install? Thanks on beforhand Martinius.
A friend who does exhaust said he will soak his gaskets in water overnight to swelll them up, then install them and has no problem with leaks. Never tried this, don't know if it works.....
Martinius, I'll do what I can but can not say much until I get it started, the one piece gasket is at least 4x thicker than the felpro gasket. If I get a chance to snap some shots I will. If it works good you will know it and also if what I do does not. I most likely will cuss like crazy and get it ready for the next move. BFH'rs. Charles
Russ, Thanks for the info, i googled that and behold there are some that do this mainly to the paper and the asbestos gaskets. Some even stated that the best fit is metal to metal like the 348 has, but with some RTV Red or Copper. This gasket from Clifford is 4x's the thickness of a felpro 235 gasket. Charles
Martinius, Took the manifolds off and getting the area ready to clean, I can see where the worst leak was which was the port at the fire wall. Also the tall tell sign that it was running way way to rich the same stains are in the same place again. I have painted the area some just to see what would leak out and where. Below are some photos of the engine without the manifolds and carburetor and some photos of the different gaskets. Being the one felpro which was on it, a new felpro and the Clifford gasket. The bolts may have been a little long they had full thread in the holes and nothing left for tightening, so maybe that also was a part of it. Somehow I have to get a carburetor tuned in to run correctly. Charles
gasket & bolts Well thank you fore sharing Charles. You could measure if the ports are in Level by using some straight Peace of metal or Wood before adding the copper silicon on the new gasket. Have a look at the blocks thread before you are gonna mount them new bolts and ad some aluminum or copper grease on them before you reinstall. That will do the trick. I am shore Your gonna do fine this time Martinius.
Exh. Leaks Thanx for the great pix Charles ; Have you lain a straight edge across the combined intake & exhaust manifold ports ? . that last one looks like the one on my '31 'A' Model Brand "F" when it was .020" off , it kept blowing out the gaskets and driving me crazy , I measured it anddidn't think .020" was that much off but having it planed at a machine shop did the trick . I remember you saying they'd trimmed off too much but looking under your hood didn't appear so . I just wonder if you'd checked his works . NO BFH's !! . I assume you'll be running a tape in those cylinder head holes as well as using shorter bolts .
Nate, The BFH is for that manifold if it can not be saved. After the exhaust leaks are over I have to get that carb dialed in so there is not all the gas leaking out. That also is a big issue, if the gas is making it's way out that means vacuum leaks and that will never let it run good. Charles
This time it did not take a weekend and a part of a Monday off. Striped down the engine last night. Took the manifold today and got it milled a little more, ran around getting new bolts different studs for the carb area, super high heat flat paint, shortened the bolts, painted the manifolds and started to put it all back together. For about and1 1/2 hours I could not find the bolts so the slowed things some the machine shop had the manifold for 4 hours, I was lucky he put it in front of a couple jobs, excluding those set backs ohh and having to go to three different parts houses to get the studs for the carb, things went smooth. I may cap off the lines to the oil filter until all the issues with these manifolds and carb get to where I really like it. Here are some photos of the parts back on the truck and after one start up in the dark. Will have to wait till Monday before Drive it I have a full week-ends work and activities planned out for Friday evening Saturday and Sunday. This Week-end is the Tri-Valley Cactus and Succulent Show at the Arboretum in Arcadia, I will be there on Sunday see what was the best of show and maybe buy a treat or two. Before long I should be able to do the break-down and put back within a few hours. Here are the photos. Charles
Reinstall manifold and cactus show. Charles this looks just fine. Did you checked the blocls side surface and used the copper Silicon ? About this Week-end Tri-Valley Cactus and Succulent Show at the Arboretum in Arcadia. I am very intrested to see some Pictures from the show Cactus plants. Very intrested in botanic in generall. My cousin in Tuscon has a uge wirled cactus in his backyard (abnormalia)that has become like that after many years of Growth and its beautifull.Cant remember the spesific name of it though. I am growing succulents for medicall purposes here at the farm , its around one acre With Rosea plants. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhodiola_rosea We grow them as they have the same effect on People like the Gin Seng root have from China. It inforces your immune system and is a suplement that keeps you in shape. You can make tea , tablets and have them roots mixed with alkohol 45 % and drink the posure in small amounts every day. A litle story; a friend of mine forgot to have the radiator filling cap in its Place tightened anough and it flew of while the engine whas hot , hot water burned my breast and face .I cooled my body down with cold water and used the leaves of the Aloe Vera http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aloe_vera Next day the burning marks and burning feeling where gone , amazing right ! Lett me know how it went , thank you Martinius.
Martinius It is the Inter-City Cactus Show and Sale at the Arboretum 9AM to 5PM ? 301 North Baldwin Ave, Arcadia, CA 91007 ? 626-821-3222 ? Here is a link to the 2011 show, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnigeiG_EeI As far as the truck goes it will not be looked at until after Sunday. Here are a few of the ones I keep at the house here. Charles
Amazing variety of cactus Thanks for sharing. I will show them to my sons girlfriend whom is thrilled about Cactus . Beautifull shapes and flowers. I found this ad about heat resistant adhesives from 3M; http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Adhesives/Tapes/Products/~/Industrial-Adhesives-Tapes/Non-Structural-Adhesives/Rubber-and-Gasket-Adhesives?N=5396571&rt=c3 Nice talking to you Martinius.
Gasketing & Succulents Charles' Cactus Garden in a wonderful place ! . I remember going to a Garden Show in 1964 and one tent was all Succulents , I was thrilled , my Mother also liked them and always had a few in her gardens . I hope you remembered to tighten the bolts from the center outwards , going back and forth ~ you're engine always looks fine to me , I know the frustration of never ending exhaust leaks in I6 engines . Oops ~ SWMBO says it's time to take our Foster boys to Church .
I Re-tightened the bolts this afternoon, ran it for awhile then let it cool and tightened it again. At start-up I still heard the same old similar noises and then later I did not. I remember when I took the manifolds back to the Machinist that just past the flopper gizmo there was a lot of black residue similar to the last exhaust port, which means thee is leaking around that flapper. So short of taking it off again and getting newer parts for the flopper gizmo, I'll run it for awhile. The engine is not making all the noise it was so that is a really good thing. Charles
Heat Risor Leaks There are NO parts for that other than the bi - metallic spring so DON'T FOOL WITH IT unless you want to remove it and braze the holes up . Remember to spray some graphite in there once or twice a year to prevent it from rusting solid ~ I posted the Chrysler / Jeep aerosol graphite spray P/N before and will do so again if you want , this stuff is terrific and I use it once or twice a year to keep every key lock I know about , working like new . Home or Auto , this stuff is The Bee's Knees .
This Hobby........ Not really being a car guy, I thought it would be fun to take a 63 year old truck down to the frame and build it the way I want it. I am all done, and drove it 300 miles only to find out the rear main seal is leaking like a siv! The front of the motor has also developed a leak. My mechanic said no problem, we will just pull the motor! I have been at this five years and have run out of time. I am frustrated beyond belief, so I know your pain! I am at the point where I am avoiding my garage (not good). Snowmobile season can't come soon enough.....
Ahh, ya just gotta go in and do it. You will find that the dread of doing the job is usually much worse than actually doing it. After that, you drive and enjoy it, get thumbs up and a little old lady or 2 telling you they remember their husband's truck like that, then a few stories of teenage loving and riding with grandpa and it is all worth it.
