Hello everyone, I am nearing the time to replace my rotted wood bed on my 64 Chev longbed stepside. I am really scared to start this as I am not sure what I will be getting myself into.

I would appreciate anyone's advice on this project, is it wise to buy one of the complete bed kits that are available? Can it be done for a more reasonable price than the kits?

Any suggestions, failure stories and success stories would be appreciated.

Thanks to everyone for all the advice so far....

Custom Classic Trucks did an article on this about a year ago. If you're going to redo the bed then change out the beds mounts if needed. Replace any rusted out cross sills. If you use a kit spend the extra money to have it pre-drilled. Make sure the bed is square by taking a corner to corner measurment. The measurment should be the same. Stain the wood prior to installing the bed. Also check out this site for more info http://www.gmcpauls.com/47-72%20BedWood%20Info.htm
