[updated:LAST EDITED ON Nov-30-05 AT 04:34 PM (CST) by Robert (admin)]I also own a 1962 C-10, and It also has an interest in the disscussion. The first came from Denver Co., the second came from Arizona (both obtained on Ebay). A lot of people selling on Ebay don't seem to know what cab supports are. Please allow me to clarify the terms. Four cab supports are just beneath the floorboards of the cab and seem to be welded and bolted (to sides of) to the cab. They are supported from short off shoots from the frame by approx. 3 in. dia. rubber disks that are often crushed. Of the 4, the 2 up front seem to be the most affected by rust. My brother-in-law says that as these trucks are, that in a roll-over or a crash into a substantial vehickle like a newer C-10, the cab could separate from the frame. He use to build and race stock cars back in the mid sixties, so I pay some attention to him. It would be smart for me to plan to replace these cab supports soon but the prospect seems daunting. It looks like that I have to dissconect the cab from the frame, moter, and brake lines and probably a bruised handful of other things, then cut out the cancered cab supports (plus might as weld in new floor boards, rocker pannals, and --have I overlooked something most rust-buckets need doing at this time?) then weld new ones in. I'm going to have to find a shop that has done this. I hope I can find one in North Carolina. I need help, guidance and encouragement. Anybody out ther ever done this? Did it work out to your satisfaction? Would you do it again, if needed? What ALL did you schedule to do at his time? Is there any alternatives to consider?
RE: Cab support replacement on a 19 I'm a first timer at anything except minor vehicle repairs who now has the cab off (66 C10)and removed the first of four cab mounts because of serious rot on and around them. For me the cab removal is worth it because: -Due to a whiplash injury I have to limit my "overhead" work hence the cab removal. -There is so much repair needed on the cab bottom. -The cab was completely stripped on an almost full resto anyway. Four more bolts and some overhead winch work wasn't much more effort. The cab is lying firewall up on a 14" wheeled platform making underside access easy. Beginning w/the forward mounts I plan to patch the floor pans next, then rockers, then rear mounts and surrounding metal. The cab will be moved/rotated/or whatever it takes to finish the rear mounts and cab corners. Tack welded alignment braces may be needed on the driver side because of extensive corrosion. I'm not sure yet if this will be required on the passenger side. I suspect CAB ON mount replacement is doable by loosening the other mounts and pressing on.
RE: Cab support replacement on a 19 Thank you. There are several experianced body shops around here that want to take alook at my problem. I plan to take pictures to record the work as it's done and write up the experiance to share on this forum in the futcher.
RE: Cab support replacement on a 19 That would be appreciated. I'll upload some photos soon. Lower door pillar/post repair is now added to my list. Fortunately, the passenger side has barely enough metal to serve for template modeling. If it was a bad as the driver side... Good Luck!
