So it was such a long time ago that I took my truck apart that I can't remember what these holes in my inner fender are for. I'm assuming they might be for the wire harness. Maybe some kind of clip went in here? The two holes directly below where the headlamp wires come through into the engine compartment are the ones that really have me baffled. Maybe the same thing, wire clamps to hold down the wires inside the fender well?

Also, I tried putting the castle nut on the post/pin/whatever that hooks the drag link and pitman arm together, but since I greased everything, the post turns with the nut. There doesn't seem to be a slot on the backside of the drag link to put a screwdriver in, so I'm just wondering what the best way to do this would be.

As always, thanks for any info on these two items.

BTW, for you who don't miss any details, that IS said castle nut on top of the steering box. And yes, I have yet to install the inserts that seal off the space where the fender/fire wall meet. That's what weekends are for though, right?

Looks like Bill solved one of your queries! Your assumption for the holes is correct. You should have a clip in each hole to hold your wiring.

    Castle Nuts

Correct , they're for the loop harness holders .

For the castle nut , just get a long bar and use it to force the tapered pin deeply into it's hole , this will hold the tapered pin from turning as you tighten up the nut .

All tie rod ends , pivots , ball joints & so on use this same trick .

Remember to use a good size cotter pine that -barely- fit in the hole , not some tiny thing .

    Thanks all!

I guess I need to find out where these clips might be had. It is coming back to me. They are a bayonet style clip.
Thanks Nate! I will give your trick a try.
I guess I also need to look at my manual and see if it has any info on whether there is a large washer that goes against the pitman arm or not.

Bill~ You are my rock! :p

Talk about mystery holes, what's the hole at the bottom of this hood hinge for?

Rico, it's just another place to put a hex head bolt in to help secure the hinge. The shop manual says to remove the 2 bolts on the inside of the cowl first, then remove the outside one. It quotes "NOTE: The reason for working from inside to outside at this point is to prevent hinge from falling and causing any damage." Guess they don't want you to scratch the finish!:D

Don't worry about that bolt, you will forget about it long before you get to the point of needing to put it back together. If you are like most of us:)

And apparently I could use about 7 or 8 of them. (I know I'll drop one or two that will bounce off to who knows where...)

    3Rd. Hinge Bolt

DON'T forget it ! it's very important , uses a large flat washer to gusset the load .

Russ , I have thousands of old VW hardware like you do , I'm trying to get rid of most of it but no one wants it because they're all too lazy to de rust and re paint it before use .
