We have a long time customer and friend that is resto rodding a 52 3W at the shop. He's in his early 70's (young to me) and a hard worker. So far he has gotten pretty good with the wire feed welder and absolutely loves the plasma cutter. On body work he has bought about 4 gallons of Bondo with a half gallon on the truck and 3 1/2 gallons in the form of dust on the floor. No one cuts him any slack so other than answering questions the ball is in his court. When one puts a small block chevy with a exhaust manifold alternator mount bracket into an AD the alternator hits the inner fender so we high mount the alt between the valve cover and intake using custom made brackets which involve clamping the alt in position with temporary rods, straps, baling wire, or whatever and then making up cardboard templates which are transferred to steel plate and finally all is welded and drilled to fit. This is a drawn out process so when we heard him fire off the engine we took a look to see what he had. He simply moved the factory bracket from the two drilled and tapped holes in the SIDE of the manifold to two holes he drilled and tapped on TOP of the manifold. It was pretty quiet amongst the "experts" who are usually ragging him.
Old Timers The beauty of not being a " Professional " is not knowing a thing can't be done . I'm always looking at the thins kids do as they're often like your man there ~ inventing a new & better way .
Love this story, thanks for sharing, Evan. You're right, Nate. I enjoy learning by experience in the garage/shop. Damon
