A Nate horn tune-up just won't do.

Been noticing that my original 52 GMC 6 volt horn running on 12 volts was getting a bit wimpy, so I thought I'd try Nate's patented horn tune up. When I opened it up I found that most of the smoke had escaped from the capacitor. Anyone have any idea what the value of the capacitor should be?

Bill, I've got 2 or 3 horns stashed in the attic that haven't been zapped by 12 volts. Let's mess with them and see if "un-smoked" caps have impedance values stamped on them! toot toot!:D

    Interesting .

I have scads of HELLA and BOSCH branded horns that look identical but the ones fitted to 12 volt , up market vehicles (Mercedes , Porsche , BMW etc.) all have capacitors where the ones for VW , GoGo Mobiles etc. don't .

So far I've been able to get almost all of them to work like new again by careful burnishing of the horn contacts .

The capacitor helps prolong the points life .
