Ok guys need a little nudge here. I put backup lights (not on original truck) with an ididit column, new wiring harness and am stumped as to where the switch is or rather supposed to be?
Column shifter or floor shifter? If neither has the switch built into it then you can by a switch and attach it to the shifter arm on the transmission. I used the mechanical switch shown below for brake lights on my Model A Hotrod. will work equally well as a backup light switch. It has an adjustable arm and it's worked trouble free for about 15 years. Here's a couple links: Adjustable, see photo below: http://www.gearheadworld.com/store/Universal-Street-Rod-Adjustable-Brake-Light-Switch-P1471.aspx
Should have been more specific. Its a TH400 out of a 69 chevell, looked for it in the tranny but no luck. Looks like you have a lot fancier setup than I can come up with. Thought that maybe I could go to the older style on the column but with the new column don't think that's an option. Just gonna have to figure on it some more.
Go to classic parts catalogue, look for mid year ( 65 to 75 ) chevy pass car automatic, they are there..
Where's your shifter at Doug, column or floor? With an automatic, retrofitting the mechanical switch onto the transmission shifter arm shouldn't be to tough.
Thanks Lakeroadster, this has all given me some ideas that I am going to try and I think your right, with a little bit of imagination I may have a solution.
Switches FWIW ; Those are Vintage Chevrolet brake light switches and they're *so* handy and popular they're made not only in left and right versions but also in both NO and NC versions , making them incredibly versatile . ALL heavy duty truck shops have them as they're often used as " Bed Up " tattle tale light switches . Look in the " Buyers Guide " (old fashioned paper catalog with pictures) in any FLAPS to find them .
