Hi Folks: I need to replace my 1952 3100 starter drive (bendix) and I seem to be having difficulties finding the correct one. My starter is OK, but the starter drive is shot. Classic Parts does not sell just the starter drive and all three of my local auto parts stores are unable to help. My engine is a 1956 235, 12 volt.
The drive on the left is the 'old' non-functioning drive (about 3 & 3/4 inch long) and the one on the right is a new drive - identical, except a half inch too short (about 3 & 1/4 inch long). The new drive is one I got a number of years ago at NAPA for another project, but it is about a half inch too short; NAPA no longer has any listed.
Any suggestions on where to look? Thanks.
    Richard

    Starter drive update

I found the starter drive this afternoon - Standard Motor Products tech line helped me find the exact match based on the dimensions of the old part and then I ordered it from Rock Auto. The 3 and 3/4 inch long starter drive is part number SDN8.

    Nice ! .

Now that you have the Standard Ignition P/N , why not look it up reverse and post the original DELCO/GM P/N ? . this will help in those late night Flea-Bay searches , I get lots of good stuff N.O.S. dead cheap by searching the original P/N's .

Was this for the 6 volt version ? .

    Starter drive update

The tag was missing from the starter, but someone told me they thought it might be a six volt (now running on 12).

The Standard Motor Products website lists the following for part numbers:
    Alternate/OEM Part Number(s): 1927200, 1931585, 1946221. Their tech line was very helpful.

I am surprised at some of the lengths of these type of parts....I ordered the push button switch which turned out to be about a quarter of an inch too long....the reach of the button...tried a few things, but....

Ended up just cleaning up the old one...trying to shine it up(the contacts silly, who cares how it looks)...and put it back into service...hope it works as long as it has so far. I guess next time when I have to do something....I will have to figure out what to do different.
