I recently purchased my pickup that has a 4 speed and noticed a small leak from the tranny. How and where do I check level? Also what do you recommend for oil and how much is required?
    Thanks in advance

I don't know what 4 speed transmission pre-48 Chevy trucks used, but the SM-420 that were used in 48 and later have a plug with a square head on the passenger's side. Remove the plug. Fill with GL-4 (NOT GL-5 which is bad for brass parts like synchros) until it dribbles out. Replace the plug.
