nobody I know can tell me, maybe you can?? My GMC has a 305 cid V-6,yes a V-6.. what I need to know is can I drop a 350cid in it's place? or do I need to change motor mounts and tranny mounts? And is there anything else I need to do to accomplish this swap??
Damon - Yes you can stick a 350 in your GMC. The GMC 305 V-6 is a very strong motor and there are plenty of GMC nuts that will take it off your hands. To meet a few go to the discussion groups at www.stovebolt.com and open a topic on that motor, see what you learn. They also have a swap meet section to sell it in. Might pay for the 350 swap. On the swap, you will need motor mounts, depending on the trans you may also need a crossmember, or need to relocate yours. If you move the trans. back, you will need to shorten the driveshaft accordingly. It really is an easy swap after that, and there isn't a shortage of room under the hood. Measure from the firewall to the radiator and from the front of the bellhousing to the radiator to find the limits. Measure from the mount to the bell and to the radiator on the 305 and then measure from the back of the 350 to the mount. This will give you an idea of motor mount placement and which way to move it. If there aren't holes in the frame that match the 350 mount (probably are, since GMC and CHEV. frame are the same), pilot drill and ream new ones for the 350 mounts. Steering should be well out of the way, since the gearbox is on the outside of the frame. Wiring should work as before. Make sure your starter matches your 350s flywheel (count teeth) or rob the starter from the 350 donor. Fuel line may need to be re-worked a little. If this doesn't give you the answer, try www.favorites.com/~jolly/GMCTruck.htm, if Jolly doesn't know, you probably don't ever need to know it. He is a guru of 60-66 GMCs and can get you on the right track....and he's free. Good luck, and think seriously about keeping your GMC 305, it's a great motor and it's the right motor for your GMC. It can be very fast, ask Jolly.
