What are the Pros and Cons of a 1966 Dana 44 5F closed knuckle front differential? Is a closed knuckle better of worse then and open knuckle? Can a Closed knuckle be converted to Disc brakes?

    Thanks for the help!!

    RE: 1966 K10 4X4 Disc Brakes

Hi, I have a 61 K10 and have been thinking the same thing
regarding disks on the front. As far as I know, all Chev and
GMC 4x4's 60 to 66 used the same 445F front axle.
(the 3/4 ton version used bigger eight bolt hubs). I like
my original closed knuckle axle and will find a way to convert
it to disks when I have the time to disassemble, measure
and fabricate a system. I am sure there is a way to do it.
(Never seen a kit for this). As for the pros / cons
of closed vs. open knuckles --- The closed ones limit
your turning radius - (wider circle). They are also harder
to get parts for. Aside from that, they seem like a superior
system to me. No external contamination of u joints, better
lubrication, easier to keep up (just keep the oil level up).
    Am I missing something?

    Snowman, Crawler,

I haven't heard of anyone making a conversion kit for these front axle assemblies... There is a company (in Oregon I think) that makes a conversion for the closed hub Power Wagons. Here's their link, it will give an idea of what would be involved.
