I have a rebuilt 54 Chevy 235 with an RV cam, small dome pistons, split exhaust manifold (fabricated from the original) and hydraulic lifters. Currently having issues with the rebuilt original 1 barrel carb and have heard the 2 barrel is a nice upgrade (not really interested in going the 2 or more 1 barrel route).

I am having a hard time finding a definitive answer on what kind of 2 barrel carb set up can be used with good results.

    Looking for the following answers:

    * What brand / model of carb should be purchased? Wanting to retain the manual choke.

    * What brand and model of adapter should be purchased to connect the 2 barrel to the existing manifold?

    * Will there be a need to build custom throttle linkage or can that be purchased also?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Happy Holidays.

I would use a Holly 350CFM 2 barrel. I use two of them on mine and have great success. Just make sure you match the power valve to whatever your vacuum reading is....Big Tim  tims pics 026.jpg

I looked at the Stovebolt site and did not see a carb that supported a manual choke (only water or electric). Might just be missing it. ???

Thanks Big Tim. Will search the web this weekend to see what I can find. Did you use an adapter or was your manifold already set up for a 2 barrel.

Also, are you running electronic ignition? If so what solution did you use?

Thanks again guys for the help.

I have an electric choke on mine and it works great, but it's no big deal to put on a manual one if that's what you want.

    2 barrel setup ?

Tom Langdon 2 BBl setup the Holly/Carter setup is a big improvement combined with the dual intake and dual exhaust headers. When tuning and adjusted the carbs in the right way the 6 cyl. engine gets better fuel euconemy and performence then with the conventinal 1 bbl. setup. A good alternative could be the Carter YF or other model 1 BBL setup/Fenton dual intake/dual exhaust and headers. Beware of the fact that you loose around 10% enginepower with double exhaust pipes. Volker from germany on this forum has made an intresting mechanicall solution to it. He welded the dual exhaust pipes together into one to prevent engine performance dropping wich is an good solution. You might even use your original exhaust manifold to save some money here.
The other hardware as the linkage and adapters/manifold bottemplate follows the setup. You can keep your manual choke when putting up a Carter/Rochester/Stromberg 28 1 BBL carb.

Using the manual choke with the wire function does not give any advantage or better fuel euconemy , but i understand that you might like it the way it is.
With the cheap fuel prices to in the US it does`nt really matter i`ll gues.

Tom Langdons elctr. MINI Hey is made for this purpose and functions really well .

I have installed everything on my truck new overhauled 235 engine and nothing to complain here.

Hope this whas of any help , you could make a phonecall to Tom whom lives in the Michigan Area and ask him about anything you want ? He is a great guy with years of good reputation in the buisness.

I custom built that manifold about 30 years ago to use with the Holly 2 barrels. I also removed the chokes and they still seem to work just fine. The ignition is a combination of an early Mallory duel point (YC) type distributor, Mallory coil, MSD 6A ignition box with adjustable timing control and 8.8 Accell plug wires....Big Tim:cool:
