Howdy. Got a 77 stepside, 350 slightly warmed over, rebuilt quadrajet carb, stock driveline. Plan to tow a 16" '67 Travelpak trailer quite a bit, & some around-town occasional driving. Would like to get an overdrive trannie for better mileage when not towing. Some tell me a 2004R would be much cheaper than the 700R4 & OK, others say the 200 isn't strong enuf to handle the towing, even with a trannie cooler. Your thoughts, please?
I know some that did the 200R4 in a truck on line. If you where just using the truck for driving and not hauling that might be a option but the 700R4 for a truck is a better trans hauling. in stock form . But 350TH trans is much better for hauling. both over drives should be up graded and not left in OD when hauling loads. In a car the 200R4 is a good replacement for the 350TH it's almost the same length. In the truck the 700R4 is the same length as a most truck 350TH. I Tran cooler for the AUTO"S is a must if you want them to last longer and run cooler. In the 700R4 you need 82 case to 87 but the guts would be good to get 86-90. If you try the 200R4 85-88 cases as mean new aftermarket or 700R4 goodies that fit the 200R4 trans. Oh a good deeper pan for both would be good but $$$ for them. Or you can get aftermarket high performance types from a few good companies ready to in stall.
