Hello all you people who know the low-down on these old sixs. There seems to be much love for the 235. Figures, I have a 228. So I was wondering. Should I redo my 228 or go hunting for a 235? Mine runs when it's made to, and I'm sure it's only because it has to much pride not to, but is that just because it knows I'm contemplating it's demise??? I want something that'll haul my heavy 3/4 down the road on a daily basis and not complain about doing it. What do you think? 235 or reward my 228 for sticking around all these years?
Part two. Being as though I DO have a 3/4 and have to redo the front end, back end, inside , outside, I was wondering how much of the 1/2 ton suspension parts found in catalogs will actually fit on my 3/4? I took my trusty tape to the front end parts of the 54 Chevy 1/2 ton frame that I have. (On wheels) and then checked my 3/4, and just from the tale of the tape, I couldn't see any difference. Of course I had my 4 year old daughter trying to help me, so I may have been off an inch or two... Which leads me to my last question. (For tonight. ) What about... roller bearings ...on a 3/4? Just asking 'cause they make them sound so sexy in the catalogs!!! Thanks for your thoughts. Much appreciated no matter what they are.:) :)

228 engine is a " long " engine made only for GMC trucks , it is far better than any Chevy engine is and now I'm SOooooo jealous ! tune the living crap out of it and do some short , HOT oil changes , unless it overheats it should be fine . it has _7_ main bearing Vs. Chevys 5 plus the cylinder block has a much higher nickle content in it to reduce wear and on and on Blah blah blah ~ I hate you . :D

I use and prefer the original typ ball bearings in the front wheel hubs as they have less rolling resistance and can carry higher loads _if_ you keep them properly maintained and adjusted ~ this means annual re-packing and adjustment , no big deal .

    Enjoy your truck .

Thanks again Nate! Okay, I'm almost convinced to sell the 54 Chevy rollin' frame and go with a complete make-over of my 3/4. The only thing is, I see that frame sitting there and it's saying, "A frame off... I'm already a frame! Put the parts on me and then that body!" But it seems like, with the exception of having 8 lugs and those d--- 3/4 hubs hangin' out there, I'd be at least $ ahead cause I wouldn't have to put the gears in the back of the 1/2.

hey, mabe this is the ticket that seals the deal. Will a 228 and it's transmission fit the tube and distance the Chevy 54 offers? Sorry, just as I figured. I catch myself zoning off in the middle of anything with yet another "What if..." =^(

    What To Keep ?

Unless I absolutely had to , I'd not be selling off one single part untill I had a finished truck I liked to drive sitting in front of me.....

    Your call .

You said a mouthful there, Nate! Never get rid of anything if there is even the slightest possibility that you could use it again!

    Junk?

I know what you mean. Here in Pittsburg Kansas, we ca'nt have any fun either. As I was driving home tonight, I realized that whatever I do, my ride has GOT to be able to go 70 without complaints. I do this daily, and it will have to also. Would a 228&4-speed(original) tied to a more modern end do this? Or should I be thinking V-Nate with auto and modern end? I could at least keep the original front end steering if I'd just write this stuff down!!! (The headers that would clear the o-steering box. K? I hope this d---- thing still has me logged on! I'm gettin' tired of re-writing this stuff!!!

    Safe Speed

Be aware these old trucks weren't designed to go 70 so everything had better be top notch before you get going that fast...

The correct size rear tires and the 228 should be able to make 70 + easily .

In Flagstaff m Az. to-night , saw some nice old trucks just sitting out in the desert to-day.....

What the heck is the deal with this thing logging us off before we're done writing our thoughts? C---! I was saying something about how cool it was that my 228 could handle 70mph. But what rear are we talkin' 'bout here? If it's a whole new thing to get rid of those hubs I hate, can I put the 6 lug 1/2 front end under the front of my 3/4? I am sure they are the same everything... HELP MR. WIZARD!!!!!!
