I need a new motor in my '60 Apache and looking for advice on which engine to go with. 283 or 350? Wondering whether I go with original (not matching) 283 or a more powerful, flexible 350. I plan on driving it daily, but power never hurts! It has a 350 trans. Thanks for your help.

More than likley you can buy a new 350 cheaper than a new 283. Also from the outside a small block looks like another small block. I would go with the 350.
it depends on your driving style/needs/wants.. a 283 revs up REALLY FAST!(have to watch them, or they will over rev on you) it has a smaller rotating mass, and has a steel crank stock. BUT it lacks the "kick in the butt" torque that a 350 naturaly has of course the 283 will still smoke the tires though. my 283 typically runs a lot cooler then a 350, they get a LOT better gas milage over a 350 , and if memory is correct, they typically will bore out to .060-.100 over without getting into the water jacket. I like both engines a lot. I think if I had a manual tranmission, I would go with the 283 and if I had a auto, I would go with the 350, mainly because the 283 is so much fun to drive when you have a stick behind it. AS for bolting the turbo 350 to the 283 it should bolt right up. the smallblocks bolt pattern on the back are all the same. food for thought.. I plan on putting a 700r4 behind my 283.. with the deeper first gear ratio of that tranny, and the overdrive, I should be able to really light the tires up and still get around 20 m.p.g. if I can keep my foot out of it.}> the 700r4 is within and inch of the turbo 350 I think, so mounting it up should not be hard. Also, do you plan on pulling anything behind your truck? go with 350 has a lot more torque and horsepower potential. all your manifolds/accesories should mount up. hope this helps you on your decision. eugene68
I put a 350 in my truck and dont like it. It cost to mutch to drive to school I plan on rebilding the 283 for it
