[updated:LAST EDITED ON Jun-24-04 AT 12:49 PM (CST)]Hey,
I'm in the same boat as you with a '67 with 4:56 gears. I'm looking at replacing the TH400 with a TH700R4 overdrive trans and changing to a 3:70 ratio. There are several sources for these gears, get on Google and start looking.
I'm having the same issue my 70, take a look at the drivetrain superstore (www.rivetrainsuperstores.com), they have quite a selection and the site is pretty helpful determining the correct ratio.
Then most likely what you have is an Eaton- big removeable pumpkin *AND* an inspection cover. Lowest numerical ratio available was 4.10's. If you're mechanically inclined, or have a buddy who is, the cheapest way around this is to swap in a '73 & up GM corporate 14 bolt. There's SOOO many out there they're practically free, with ratios down to 3.20's. This is all moot, of course, if you're planning to swap the tranny to something newer/OD'd... personally I'm doing BOTH.
>there is a lower ratio then the 4.10 and it is the 4.56 that
>were used in 4x4 trucks
Well, yes- and my '61 1.5 ton has 5.13's (along with a 2" rear sway bar- LOL!), and there's more- but I don't remember them all... but please note: I didn't say lower gear ratio(bigger #'s)- I said lower *NUMERICAL* ratio (smaller #'s)
