3rd gear help

    I have a 1956 3600 and it pops out of 3rd gear while driving unless I hold onto the shifter, 3 on the tree by the way, if I hold it in gear it drives fine. So what gives and what can I do to remedy this situation? Any help would be very much appreciated. George

    It has been a long time since I was into a standard tranny but I believe your problem is the synchronizer for that gear. If it was me, I would replace all the bearings and synchronizers since the tranny has to be torn down anyway. I am assuming that your linkage is pushing the gear in all the way.
    Might be other things that could cause this problem, I am sure the other owners will let you know what they have found. Good luck.

    An overhaul is in order , you'll need new synchro rings , ALL the bearings in the tranny , some are rollers , the input bearing is a ball typ , some cluster gear shims and maybe the cluster shaft too , plus a gasket kit .

    A worn out cluster shaft will be appaerent when you remove it ~ if the visible wear , can be felt by running your fingernail over it it's JUNK .

    Once in a while the cluster gear proper , wears out and causes jumping out of gear .

    Do buy the factory Shop Manual , it's only $30 and will walk you through this job , work slowly and carefully , it's easy to loose one roller bearing and no , you cannot assemble it with even one missing .

    I use grease to hold the roller bearings in place as I assemble the tranny .

    The chances of you doing it wrong or damaging it , are nil and the feeling you'll get when you drive it again and it shifts well and doesn't pop out of gear , well you have to experiance if to know but's a heady feeling of achievement .

    Consider replacing the clutch's friction disc whilst the tranny is out as a prophylatic measure , read my older posts about Clutch Service for the nitty gritty .
