Just in case any of you are going to have to go through this, thought I would pass on some notes, there are some previous threads that give some details, but leave out some. My 4.1 has a cracked Head/Intake, basically junk. My 305 Doner is from a 1978 low mileage Caprice. I now have everything mechanically swaped and in place. Lucky for me, the donor came complete out of a running car and with all emmision stuff, less the power steering set-up.

This was no hot rod project, just attempting to get a motor and exhaust that will pass emmisions here in North Carolina. Lots of research, lots of hard work and lots of small problems to resolve. Here are the some more of the items that needed attention:

Frame mounts-area all the same, Bought new motor mounts, just need to move the new motor mounts up a hole to the V-8 holes. Transmission mounts for the 3sp stay in the same place. Clutch rod parts all line up as well. No problems there.

Bell housing and flywheel are interchangeable (11" clutch arrangement). No problems. I believe the V8 starter is going to be O.K., if not I can simply use the 4.1 starter

Power steering-the 4.1's use the metric unit which will not work on the earlier V8's, had to order brackets from Summit (no/AC) and buy new pump from Autozone (1981 and prior) Existing Hyd. lines will work

Exhaust-Cat conv. lies in the same place on the 4.1 as the V8's. I found a used "Y" pipe in a junk yard, but it did not work, there are (2) types of stock manifolds, under plug and over plug. I believe the trucks use over plug and cars may be under plug. My 305 has the under plug arrangement. Anyway, I have to go to the local muffler shop and have the 'Y" pipe built for my set-up.

Charcoal canister lines-they hook right up, no problems

Radiator-Had to replace with a larger V8 Style, New Upper and lower shrouds too. The mounts and hardware from the 4.1 will work.

Wiring-Almost the same, some wires will have to shortened or lengthened. the only isses seem to be the solenoid wiring is different (3 post vs. 2 post)and the V8's have an idle solenoid which I am still researching on how to wire. Schematics call for a relay and speed switch that I have to reseach yet. The 4.1 did not have this

Accelerator cable-Looks like the 4.1 will work

I'll be staring it up this weekend, will post any more probelms if they arise.
