Hey 283 whats up? I've been on vacation sorry it took so long to answer back. I found out its actually the transfer case, its leaking a good bit anyway so I'm just going to rebuild it. I have my 62 for sale look at the for sale posts. Talk to you later Jeremy

Hey Jeremy, Sorry to drag this old post out of the dumpster but I did a search on "transfer case" and this one came up as pertinent to my situation. My transfer case in my 65 is loud as well. It whines and some rattle sounds too up around 40-50mph and loudest with slight deceleration or acceleration and silent when coasting with no load on the gear.. My 63 shop manual says that gear noises of whine and backlash sounds should be expected. The gear lube is at the top filler. What did you end up doing in your situation? I am not planning on using this truck that much, maybe a couple thousand miles a year so am wondering if I should worry about it.

I have since put a 700r4 and np 208 in my truck. From what I have read in other forums the rockwell transfer case does make noise because of the straight cut gears. Just be sure to keep it full of oil. I have read if the oil level gets low the case will burn up or explode. It should serve you well, its lasted this long!! I wouldn't worry about it unless the wining drives you crazy!!:D

Thanks, I guess I was just needing some reassurance that it isn't necessarily a bad one. Maybe I will order that sound deadening pad that goes under the mat.

    Noisey transfer case

I just changed out the gear lube in my transfer case and fished around in the plastic drain pan with a strong magnet and didn't find any metal in the old lube at all. I guess I am not going to worry about it at this point.
