i would like to know the bore and stroke of a 454.
i have a list of things that i'm going to use to build my 454(496 stroker if posible useing a 454 block). here it is
preformer rpm air gap intake, 800cfm edelbrock carb,performaer rpm oval port heads,super stock industries roller rockers Performance automotive warehouse Racing master kit with 10:1 compression and forged trw forged pistons,and sanderson headers. can anyone think of anything that might help make more power? i'm going to try and get that camshaft switched to the edelbrock camshaft, and the crank switched to a longer stroke. it will be balanced.

Heyyyy, that's some monster engine you're building, pal.

firstly, we need to know how you're gonna use this toy...daily driver, towing, stoplight racing, street/strip, racing only,etc.

also need to know trans & rear end gears, convertor size, tire size,etc.

don't just stop at the headers. follow up with X-Pipe, 2.5" pipes and high-perf mufflers.

JMO, edelbrock RPM cam not recommended for heavy cars, AND high-lift rockers.

do not neglect your ignition system; HEI distributor, cutom tailored ignition advance and wires should suffice.

take care of your cooling system also.

i am anxiously following your BBC's build-up, BECAUSE...

my '56 has a 454 BBC/T350 trans/9" rear/13" M/T Sportsman tires, strictly a daily driver.

with performer intake, RV cam, 750cfm AFB, HEI, stock exhaust manifolds, and 2.5" pipes, i am totally satisfied with this big-block's performance.:D :D :D
 
[updated:LAST EDITED ON Sep-12-02 AT 11:51 PM (CST)]ok the igniton system i want is from msd the summit part # is msd-8474. i want to put 3 inch flowmasters um the raditator is from brassworksit is a 454 gm truck 16" diameter hex. my axle is a dana 44 um i'm going to keep my stock gear ratio. i don't know what it is but it is around 3:57 to 1 or so.um i'm going to have a muncie 4sp. Maybe a 5 or 6 speed tranny from a camaro or firebird. and the clutch is going to be centerforce.how about that comp cam's magnum cam series 280H. it will be driven as a daily driver untill winter most of the time. i might race it once in a while. i want to put that air ride suspension on my turck too. my tire size is going to be 30x9.5x15 it will be used to tow once in a while. if you and think of anything else i need let me know.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Sep-14-02 AT 00:45 AM (CST)]ok i got a couple of questions. how will ta stock hei distributor hold up for performace wise. should i get full length headers. or shorties. how are ghlasspacks performace wise. i have glasspacks on my 283 v8 that is in my truck now. i like the sound. i was thinking the purple horrnies that are in the jegs mag.they are 32inches long and bolt to the header they are 3"inlet and out. can i use my exturnal regulator alt that is on a sbc. and will my stock guages work with this new engine i'n building. ok i got this kinda figured out i need to bore my block .060 over and get a 4.25 stroke crank. correct.whats the most i want to bore my block out ever(or bore it over .010 and get a crank with a stroke of 4.35).what do you think of the cam choice?

JMO, stock HEI is just as good as aftermarket, for your application. just rebuild, and retailor vacuum/mechanical advance .

if you do a search on www.chevelletech.com or www.chevytalk.com this technique has been discussed many times there.

if you are interested, do a search on racer1320's BSE recipe, at the chevelle site...BEFORE BUYING YOUR ENGINE PARTS. that's his formula of building a 454 big-block (stock stroke) run consistent low-eleven second dragstrip times...with GM factory heads, hydraulic cam and one holley carb.

JMO again, glasspacks are an audio illusion, for noisy small HP machines(no disrespect meant to people who use them).

it is simply a matter of personal preference. some like glasspacks, some like flows, some like borlas, etc.

i like the flows in my truck, but i like the quietness of dynomax in my '57 coupe.

if you have a high-powered big-block (or whatever), it is like a mechanical boom box...with lots of low, middle and high-end sounds.

i would imagine that high-performance mufflers(like flows/dynomax,etc) would sound (and perform) much better, when tailored to full-length headers, X or H-pipe crossovers, and 3" exhaust system.

your sbc's alternator, PS pump, and A/C compressor will all work, with the proper big-block brackets.

those parts, the carb and the distributor, are the only items that are useable on both engines.

the stock gauges will all hook up; i'm using the original gauges in my '56 truck, with my big-block.

be sure to install an aftermarket water temp gauge also. i use both kinds; the auto-meter reads 165 degrees(great!)...at the same time that the stock gauge is almost pegged(holy cow!)

hey i got and exhaust idea. ok here it is it starts with headers(full lenght)then it has 3 inch pipe with balancer pipe and i runns to the outside ofthe frame railsand goes to the muffler. then exits with 2 2.5 inch turn downs that are 9inches long right out of the muffler. it doen't even go under the bed it stays um der tht cab.

Hmmmmmm, that set-up has been used in HP applications, with 2.5" tailpipes(2 per side) running all the way to the bumper.

JMO, i would at least run those 4 tailpipes to exit in front of the rear tires, not under the cab....for safety purposes.

hey thanks for all the help. ok i was thinking that it would melt the tires? I got a nother question about that. here it is. what safty reasons? the gas tank? um ok i think it will be moved back to infront of the tires and i can turn the turndowns the two inside ons in a little and the outside two out a little. heres whats new i got my headers today for a 100$. thanks again for the help.

the safety issue is the problem of CARBON MONOXIDE, a deadly odorless gas, which could find its way, through floorboard holes, into the cab, AND KILL YOU.

to fix that, you can run tailpipes all the way to the rear, or exiting before the rear tires.

although it is illegal here in Hawaii, i have seen MANY of the high HP hot rods, who run 3"+ tailpipes ahead of the rear tires. they exit there, so they don't have to deal with the problems of fitting the larger tailpipes over the axle tubes.

Nooooo, the hot tailpipes will not melt the tires, as long as they're not feeler-gauge clearance close.

JMO, the turndowns could be facing...down, or the pipes could be cut to face straight out.

what brand/size headers? new?

The guy cut one of the pies off so i got to weld it back on. What is teh difference between flowmasters and big block series flowmasters?

hey i was wondering how would a 3spd tranny hold up to a the power of a heavily modified big block or a mild big block. the tranny was in a 63 1/2 ton with a 283 sbc.thansk for the help.

Can anyone tell me the difference between the big block series flowmaster and the origal series mufflers?
any help would be greatly apprieceated.

Sounds like your going several steps above mine and I really enjoy
mine. My 454 is bored 030 over 10 1/2 to 1 compression, rv cam,
alum hi-rise and a 600 or 650 Holley although I'm thinking of
stepping up to a 750. Guess we're never satisfied.:)

I think your right we are never satified with the power we got or many other things so we just keep doing more and more things to make it better.
