HOWDY...OK!!!..bruce here, well I took a piece of my truck off to see just how hard it was going to be to get the old paint off and bring it down to bare metal,so I tried "chemical" stripper it worked ok after 3 treatments!! there has got to be a better way!! and when I get it down to "the bone" I need to know what to treat it with, I may not get back to putting these parts back on for some time seeing as this project could conciveably take a year or longer (most likely longer)...thank you,desperado.. Hi Bruce,

Try aircraft paint stripper or other "heavy duty" types. ( the Jasco stuff you find in the hardware store will take a few applications)

After it is clean of old paint, wash it off completly and wipe all surfaces down with acitone or other paint prep. Then use a self etching primer, (automotive), to cover all bare metal. Try to avoid touching the bare metal with your hands, (or other body parts!), as it will leave oil on the surface that will keep the primer from getting a good bond. Sanding down the areas before priming, and between coats of primer will also help with a good final appearance. DONOT let bare metal sit, especially this time of year. Surface rust will appear in a matter of a few days, so cover it with primer as soon as possible.

This is the critical part of paint prep and it effects the final outcome. Try and Internet search for details on sanding etc..too.
