So I am pulling the truck completely apart to get it to the blaster. While taking all parts out of the doors I pulled the window regulators and tracks. These are in used condition but still operational. They appear to be the original regulators so I was wondering if there anything that should be done to recondition these? Would I be better off replacing them? Any insight on what the best course of action would be would be greatly appreciated.
Door Guts If every thing worked , just clean it well , 100 % of the old rock hard grease then wire brush the sliding parts , re - lube it all and re - use . I use white lithium grease for my door latches & window lifts , others may have better lubricants .
If they work well with no skipping, clean the hell out of them and re grease. I have had some that have a bad spot, but work well otherwise. The problem is that once the bad spot engages, you have to manually pull the window to a good spot to keep rolling up.
Thanks Nate and Russ- I will take your advice and just clean them up really well and plan on reusing them. A little grease will probably do the mechanisms some good and make them a lot easier to operate.
A _LOT_ Of Grease And you MUST clean out 100 % of the old , rock hard grease that's black before you wire brush all the rust off of it'll be a bad job . I use white Lithium grease and wipe off the excess after I've worked the mechanisim a few times ,I get White Lithium Grease in Foo-Foo cans @ Home Depot , this allows me to get the grease way inside the gears & door latches too .
Our host sells replacement window crank shaft assemblies. The splines on mine wouldn't hold the handle in order to crank the window up and down. Additionally, this part replaces the small drive gear as well, and eliminates some of the play from all those years of use. http://www.classicparts.com/1947-50-Window-Regulator-Repair-Kit/productinfo/18-773/ this part is for '47-50 models only, so if yours is newer, not for you.
