I have burned the contact strip off 2 light switches. Could corrosion on terminals at the lights cause resistance that is responsible for the switches burning out???
Nope. Corrosion at that point would increase resistance which would reduce current flow through the switch. Fix the corrosion problem, but look elsewhere for the culprit that is burning up your switches.
Bill, I havent had a chance to really check it out but I'm guessing I have a short to ground...maybe a bad wire or bad dimmer switch. What do you think?? Carl
Carl, I burned out two of the reproduction switches myself. Finally decided to buy a universal headlamp switch with a builtin circuit breaker. No problems in 4years. Doc
I still have an original switch in my '57, but noting that you and Dr. Mike have both had trouble with repro switches, I wonder if that is because the 4 headlamp 58/59 trucks will pull more current through the switch (at least when the high beams are on) than the 2 headlight 55-57 trucks would.
I installed new headlight switch, dimmer switch and headlight harness. Headlight buckets were full of crap...leaves, mice nest, spider nests. probably had a short circut from the crap. Also found crushed wire from the parking lights (right side) where a PO installed the grill and crushed the wires bolting it down . I am guessing the double lights on the '58-'59's would pull more current on high beam than the single lights of the '55-'57's. I am going to install a 30 amp circut breaker ahead of the headlight switch to protect the lighting for the future.
