I am rebuilting my 1958 gauge cluster and wanted to know what was the correct way to rewind the speedometer back to 000000. Thanks for the help. Les
You're posting on the wrong forum but on a common topic so here goes. I take it you have the shaft with the numbered wheels removed. If you have nimble fingers you can hold the slotted tabs as you work but my stiff old fingers require a thin piece of tin clamped in the vice to slide the slotted tabs onto to keep the wheels from just spinning round and round. First slide the 1/10th's AND the ones wheel off the edge of the tin so they can turn. As you turn them there will be a hard "catch" feeling in each revolution at which time it will move the TENS wheel one number. Keep going till the zero is up (opposite the slotted tabs). Now slide the tens wheel off the tin and holding the ones and tens wheels with the zeros up turn as a unit till the hundreds is on zero. Do not let the others turn off zero or you'll have to start again. Repeat on the thousands and ten thousands. This is better than "picking" them like a used car lot because the numbers will all be in alignment, not some higher or lower than others.
Of Course , ' Picking ' an odometer is illegal so Even is just referring to soemthing he read in a book long ago....... We in The Auto Trade never , EVER saw anyone do this back in the day , oh no .
Re:Rebuild Gauges I dunno about any other states, but in Ohio we are required to make a mileage statement when we sell a vehicle and the mileage is listed on the title. If these numbers differ to the low side when you sell/trade it,a mileage discrepancy will be noted on the title.
Odometer Recording Oh yeah , we have that too , here in Sunny So. Cal. (home of fruits & nuts) and there's a box to check of you feel that the milage recorded exceeds the mechanical limits of the odometer.... No one @ the DMV cares though , I used to have an old VW Van that was rapidly closing in on 600,000 miles and when I went to DMV for the title , I told the woman and she refused to add the 6th digit...
Clocking!!! You can get 2 yrs for what we call clocking a motor, stick a knife in someone and you will get 6 months!!! (if they live of course) work that one out
' The Correct Forum ' As is now clear , Les was correct in choosing this forum as he knew he'd get the answer needed....
