I'm looking for a set of backup light assemblies for my 62'fleetside. Anyone that could help me I would appreciate it alot. David
RE: 62' Fleetside B/up Light Assy Hey Dave, As far as I know, the fleetsides didn't have back-up lights until 1966. I could be wrong, but you've probably got a bed from a '66 on your '62. Doesn't matter anyway, if you need 'em - you need 'em, right? Is that still a manual trans? I'm curious as to where they switched the back-up lights from? Mine is an auto, so The switch is on my steering column as part of the neutral safety switch. I am currently looking for a set myself, I've got about 6 poles in the water, I just got a pretty good bite on one today, and a hopeful nibble on one yesterday. If I reel more than one set in, I'll give you a hollar! Fair enough? --Greg Smith (a.k.a. Hilandr451@earthlink.net)
RE: 62' Fleetside B/up Light Assy [updated:LAST EDITED ON Jan-05-02 AT 10:33 AM (CST)]As far as I know, the fleetsides didn't have back-up lights until 1966 I have wondered just when they started using backup lights myself. I know that in 1966 it was Federal Law. However my accessory installation manual for 65 show's them as an option. Whether that was dealer installed or a factory option, I haven't figured out yet. I do know that I have seen a 63 Fleetside with them and it appeared to be completely unmolested. I also have robbed parts from a 63 GMC Fleetside in the local wrecking yard that had the lights. There is a bit of reprieve for us guys looking for the light assemblies though. I have found that the backup lights for a 1954 Buick are the same assemblies. They have the same chrome bezels and the buckets are nearly identical. Any differences would be covered up by the bezel. Heres a link..... http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/view?p=999&gid=556791&uid=417003 The first three photos were a recent auction on EBAY, the reserve, I later found out, was well over $100. They were advertised as backup lights for a 1954 Buick, something I've been told by more than one person. Thje other two photos are other auctions where the lights were advertised as fitting our pickups. I've also seen this exact assembly on 1960-66 International pickups. however I've got no proof that the lights actually came on those trucks from the factory. What I do know is finding a good set of bezels is a real pain in the neck. I've got a fair pair, with only a few minor pits and some dents from flung gravel. Put I hate to put out the $ for rechroming so I keep hoping to find a fair priced set! Hope some of this info helps in the search!
RE: 62' Fleetside B/up Light Assy Hi Hilander, My truck did'nt have backup lights originaly, but it is a option I wish it came with. The engine is a 235 six cylinder, w/ a 3 speed manual trans. It is a Custom cab and has the holes down the sides of the truck for the trim, but someone stole the trim. David
RE: 62' Fleetside B/up Light Assy Hey David, Good news! I found out from GMCPauls.com that the suppliers will start carrying the back up light assemblies as of 2/2002! I think I've pieced a pair together myself, but I thought that you might be glad to know that they are going to start offering them again aftermarket. I have also found a source for replacement bezels if anybody wants to know. I will be recieving them in the mail soon & I'll post it if these are worth it. I'll post the pics here: http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/view?p=999&gid=559262&uid=458225 ----Hilander
