As most here know , Thursday next I'll wind up my '76 GMC and head off out of state to pick up my new Moto .

SWMBO asked me if I was making sure to take along a pistol ~

As I no longer life that life , I was a bit taken aback by her question .

Is this really a necessity in solo interstate travel these days ? .

    TIA ,

Not sure which states you are driving through Nate.... but I never leave home without without the Glock .40 & 50rounds of magazined ammo.

The laws vary wildly between states on carring a weapon.

I can only speak from my perspective as I hold a Concealed Carry license in Arizona that is recognized in 34 other states as well.

Since you live in California & it is illegal to even think of owning a firearm....
    {much less being able to obtain a CCW permit}

You are bound by the Federal statutes that regulate the transportation of firearms which means you can pack the unloaded gun in an area where it is not accessible from the interior & the bullets must be in a seperate place.
So in order for you to transport the pistol legally in any state.... it must be unloaded & stored in the trunk & the bullets must be stored in a different place effectivally making the gun useless to you if you have to use it to protect yourself or SWMBO if you run into trouble in the middle of the desert somewhere.

One of the only acceptions to the federal rules is Arizona. In Arizona NO permit is required to carry a loaded gun in the interior of your car BUT ! the loaded gun must be in a holster or scabbord designed to carry guns & if a cop asks you .... you gotta tell him you have it on board.

    Thanx Joe !

I see many have read my question but only you answered .

It'll just be I on this trip , from Cali. to Ore. & back home again , I always carry some sort of cudgel but as I said before , I no longer live that life so I dislike carrying / using weapons .

Nate - If you can live in the hood without packing, I think once you get out of LA and start to breath some fresher country air, you'll find life less threatening. I have travelled all over the NW on motorcycle and by air up and down the coast on business and never felt a need to nor wished I had packed a weapon. Being out in the woods of Alaska (threat of bears) or while deer hunting locally is another matter. ;)

Hmm, I think if you look for trouble you can usually find it!
    Drive safely.

If you still live in an area where trouble doesn't look for you, you are blessed. Tennessee carry law does not require you to conceal but 99% do. The only place that I don't carry is at work because it is not permitted. When I travel by car out of state I always check that state's carry law then abide by it. There are just too many situations where you are vulnerable while traveling. Truck stops and motels near the interstates are favorite targets.

Just remember that when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

I respect the right of anyone to disagree. I know this is one of those topics that is divisive.

    Thank you !

Interestingly , although I live in The Ghetto , I'm not overly scared .

I used to pack when I was younger but after a while , the death kinda gets to you .

I do still love guns , I just don't want to need them .

I expect I'll be fine , there's always rich folks 'round for the crooks to go after , if I have to go , then I guess my time was up .

I'm lucky - living in a rural area with low crime rate. But I was a boy scout and take to heart the adage of "being prepared" I have a CWP, two handguns and several rifles.

"Smaller government, lower taxes, stronger military, personal responsibility, states rights. What is extreme about this?" NOTHING!!!
