Hello, Where do I have to adjust the space at the steering gear? If I turn at the steering wheel from right to left, there is a little to much space. Ask Wolfgang
Wolfgang: Your old pickup will never have steering response anywhere near as good as modern rack and pinion steering, but proper adjustment can help a lot. This Steering Adjustment is from the 55-59 GMC Maintenance Manual, but the procedure is the same. Note that "slop" in the steering system can also be caused by worn tie rod ends and drag link ends.
Steering Gear Remember to fill the steering box with GEAR OIL before attempting to adjust it . Also , disconnect the drag link and use a degree wheel (free online) to ascertain the *exact* center position of the long shaft before you adjust anything , this is critical and your LIFE depends on it . Once the box has been centered and lubricated , adjust it being sure to hold the adjuster screw from turning as you snug up the lock nut . Then re position the steering wheel as necessary and re install the drag link pointing straight down when the box is dead center ~ this guarantees the proper geometry and driving pleasure as you're rolling down to open road . The output shaft seal leaks and is bad 95 % of the time so go to your local GM Truck dealer and ask for the steering box shaft seal for a 1970 C/10 pickup with manual steering ~ they have the very best quality and it's only $10 . I posted the P/N here years ago , you might be able to find it .
