When thinking of buying a new HEI distributor some of the models have the coil inside the cap and som dont ? What actual different does it make and what do you guys advice when buying one ? Apreceate some advice Martinius.
I like the distributor that Tom Landon sells that doesn't have the coil in the cap, it's off the 2.8l Chevy V-6. It looks more stock. Only the trained proffesionals can tell you even have HEI.
Tom Langdons Mini Hei distr. Toms distributor looks good , but how many volts does it give on the output ? Is it 40.000 volts or 50.000 v. or even moore ? Have an new Pertronix flametrower coil that gives 3 ohm and around 40.000 volts. Would that one be to strong together with the Mini Hei ?
The ones with the coil not in the cap were just made for a couple years and mostly in the Chevy II (Nova). I'd go the coil in cap because they are so much more common which probably makes the parts more readily available and cheaper. We do our own machining off of the factory clamp down flange and use a shoulder clamp from Speedway to lock the distributor and have it the right depth in the oil pump. I like the Pertronix myself but must acknowledge that if you have trouble with an HEI you can go to any parts store and get whatever it needs cheap. With the plug gap set at 0.045 the big fat spark gets it running pronto in any weather.
Thanks for the advice and contributions. I made Tom a phonecall yesterday evening and he helped me a lot.The Mini Hei distr. he is selling gives around 35.000 volts and the coil goes with it. Thank you all for your advices.
